The police station in Stockton upon Tees had a private police officers club above ‘the shop’ as it were.
Mind it was many years ago.
I had been giving information over a fraud that I had discovered at one of the stores that I was in control of, after I was invited to have a drink.
If memory serves I paid, but not being a member had to hand the cash to one that was.

The masters can drink heavily subsidised booze, whilst the rest of us are to pay extra by having totally unnecessary price rises for political reasons.

February 23rd, 2012 11:09am Report this commentVulture - I agree with you but the point you miss is that he left the Army at the start of the New Labour project as a chippy ex-ranker moaning in the Fabian Society about glass ceilings; he actively helped out with the application of Gordon Brown's dead hand.
Tragically, what you said about Labour now applies to the conservatives; they are delivering far worse damage to the Armed Forces than Brown ever did. I predict the usual suspects interventions but this is a political choice they have made and has little to do with the absence of money.
If you are concerned about the Armed Forces and Defence then neither mainstream party offers a crumb of comfort, thanks to Cameron's lightweight view of the world and his flipflop wearing, out of the box, "strategists".

February 23rd, 2012 2:35pm Report this commentLabour bar room brawler Eric Joyce has had a massive chimp out, he's released his inner chimp. It's taken 20 years but I knew it would happen and he would finally get his comeuppance.
This labour creep is a real nasty piece of work. Typical Scots Labour apparatchik, careerist, opportunist, climbing the greasy pole, will say and do anything for his own advancement and instant gratification.
This Eric Joyce sleazeball came to my attention a couple of years ago. Joyce spent 20 years as an officer in the British Army. He left the army and said that they were all '' racists, bigots and sexists.''
So why did Joyce stay in the army then for 20 years then if he knew all this ?
This slimeball also cut the money for soldiers who were injured in Afghanistan.
Joyce is the politician with the highest claim for expenses in one single year £200,000. When he was furnishing his house he bought some paintings £ 1000 and billed the taxpayer for it.

February 23rd, 2012 2:58pm Report this commentIn any private company, subsidised or free refreshments would be considered by HMRC as a benefit in kind. The subsidised, or free amount, would be assessed as net of tax and the tax element would then be added on at the marginal rate costing the private organisation an additional (approximate) 70%. It's the rulers what get the pleasure, it's the taxpayer what gets the pain.

February 24th, 2012 11:42am Report this commentWilhelm, what's the British Army got to do with it? He's a Labour MP. He parted company with the Army a long time ago and, from his side at least, not on great terms.
He has clearly been turned into a thug by Parliament and what I think this shows is there needs to be a minimum price per unit for alcohol especially tailored to MPs.
They will have to show ID wherever they go; Scottish MPs carry an automatic weighting factor of an additional 50% over all other MPs. Not forgetting Aidan Burley of course who will be subject to a lifetime ban under the new MPAMPS (MP Alcohol Minimum Pricing Scheme).

Scotland Yard used to have, don't know if it's still there - it was known as 'the tank'. And it was subsidised - to a degree.
Wormwood Scrubbs prison - same. Probably other nicks, too. A few hospitals that I knew of. Staff clubs and pubs exist all over the shop, surely? Be fair, man. Don't let one stroppy Scot close down the social life of the nation.
