As the vote looms, Government success looks likely

Fraser Nelson 4:54pm

Depending on who you listen to, the government is currently between 4 and 18 votes down on 42 days, excluding the DUP's eight votes. But it's difficult to divine the truth when there is so much expectations management in play.

The DUP could of course take the government's £200 million and still vote with the Tories. But it would be mad to close the door to further bribes. There are two more years to go of Brown and, the way things are going, the DUP may be starting a long and fruitful relationship and may be able to negotiate control of Western Scotland.

Expect Brown to be unbearable if he wins. As, I suspect, he soon will.

Brown is - and will continue to be - unbearable, whether he wins or loses. But if he wins, it will only increase my determination (and I hope that of plenty of others) to make sure that he and his wretched party are comprehensively routed at the next election.

I think of all the areas in the rest of the UK that the DUP might want to trouser in the next 24 or so months, the west of Scotland is pretty much low down their list.

Here's what I posted on Alex Massie's blog when he quoted you , Frazer -

http://www.debatableland.com/the_debatable_land/2008/06/the-dups-calculation.html#comments

"Here's a thought , Alex .

Why don't the DUP press to extend this territorial concession to the rest of Scotland (excepting Edinburgh , Aberdeen , Banff & Buchan ) , Wales and the north , midlands and south-west of England .

They would , of course , have to find a name for such an entity .

"Britain", perhaps ?

Yours, (not entirely mischievously),

Alan from Motherwell ."

Think long and hard , Frazer . Brown is a fleeting politician . Who , now , remembers the Earl of Bute's disastrous tenure of that great office ?

Our Country is too great to allow partizan point-scoring , regional rivalries and EU machinations to bring it to an end .
