If it's the economy it's Obama, if it's foreign policy it's McCain

James Forsyth 7:04pm

A new CNN poll demonstrates what we have all long thought: if this is a national security election McCain wins, if it is decided essentially on domestic issues Obama does. The poll finds that Obama leads McCain 50-44 on the economy, while McCain has a 54 43 advantage over Obama on foreign policy.

Both camps can take comfort from these numbers. The economy is the dominant issue right now, 42 percent of the electorate describe it as their most pressing concern putting it well ahead of any other question. However, the commander in chief test is often the gut check moment for voters. The McCain campaign will hope that their advantage on foreign policy is going to prevent Obama from nailing this election down early.

The McCain strategy has to be to try and stay within touching distance of Obama over the coming months and then pass him in the final straight as voters start concentrating on who the next president actually will be. That it took Obama so long to wrap up the Democratic nomination shows that voters do pause when the idea of him actually being commander in chief comes clearly into focus.

A great summary which brings us back again to the vital question of who for VP. Up till now I had thought that McCain could afford the luxury of waiting to see who the Democrat VP would be, something which Obama might well leave to the Convention at the end of August (always assuming of course that the Clinton's search doesn't come up trumps.)

Now, though, after reading your summary I no longer think McCain has that long, particularly given the centrality of the economy as a determinant issue. Perhaps, therefore, the VP nomination could be quite close. Romney, Fred Smith (Paddy Power only quoted 40/1 against Ladbroke's 66) or don't I seem to recall that Giuliani balanced New York's books?

i have to laugh (almost) at how some even simple things get twisted .
OBAMA DIDNT TAKE TOO LONG..
Clinton was inevitable! the power/ the known brand name /the well lobbied AND Bill was courting those she couldn't get as first woman to be.
Obama started grassroots! effort and took the delegates away. ok some they lost by her own "efforts"
It's an unbelievable feat!
i heard impossible more times than i can count!

Clinton wouldn't quit till long, long After it was clear she couldn't get the delegates.

Bush/Mccain iare already setting up for more war at any cost bankrupting USA and insuring no more hanging on to a middle class - if there is a planet left ..2 class 2nd class America AS LONG AS They can Rule by force..
don think americas woes wont trickle down to you and others.
Many of us ( not just fro obama) have referred to him as MR WW-III
for awhile already esp since his trouble making trip - to stir up trouble in the Israel vs. Iran issues. as soon as he got the gop nomination.

CNN IS WIDELY held AS PRO GOP .
Most corporate news leans to the right lane
At first Obama couldnt get a mention then it was all rumor and innuendo.

I saw what your melanie STILL does on another site very star , very national enquirer!
YIKES

SNOPES .COM HAS MORE TRUTH !

For all the big talk about what a sure win this is going to be for God Obama, he has actually fallen back in the polls since he got a little rise after Hillary quit.

Now he's barely ahead of McCain if at all.

This, after a week's incredible ballyhoo about his greatness by the swooning media harem.

It's not going to get much better than this for Haroon Al-Obama.

McCain is in with a fighting chance.
