What should David Davis ask Brown?

James Forsyth 1:16pm

Ben Brogan reports that David Davis has put off resigning as an MP. The word in Westminster is that he is waiting until Wednesday as he intends to go out with a question to Gordon Brown at PMQs. (Considering that the Speaker refused to let Davis announce that he was standing down as an MP in the chamber, he really should—in the interests of fair play—call on Davis on Wednesday.)

This is probably Davis’s last moment when he will be in full command of the news agenda and a killer question would keep the issue in the headlines for the next few days. Leave your suggested questions in the comments, if someone guesses right what Davis will ask we’ll happily send them a bottle of Coffee House champagne.

Even money that he doesn't get called.

Be more fun if DC suffers an indisposition just before PMQs and DD steps into the breach.

He'll go for the kill, and ask him why he won't defend his own policies and principles in a public vote. He'll probably find space to slip in a taunt about how many more elections he's going to side step.
No point trying to be clever or subtle now!

At this moment in time, are you more likely to be killed crossing the road in the UK than being blown up by a terrorist bomb? And when will we see legislation to crack down on these killer cars...oops! Scrub that last bit.

Ask him what mandate he has to spend taxpayers' money on pushing ratification of a treaty that is now legally unimplementable - and what this shows about the government's attitude to removing people's rights and freedoms without consent.

Almost definitely will include the words "Magna" and "Carta"

It will be simple but effective...something along the lines of whether Gordon Brown has the courage - with an emphasis on that word, given Brown's own preoccupation with it - of his convictions on 42 days. If he does, Davis will say, surely he must stand a Labour candidate because anything else would be political cowardice. I don't personally agree with that but I want some champagne and it's what I would say in Davis' position.

"As the Prime Minister is undoubtedly a brilliant political operator, as shown by his negotiating skills with the DUP last week over 42 days, and his ability to convince us of the difference between the Constitution and the Treaty making a referendum unnecessary, can he tell us yet on what pressing security grounds he intends to avoid going to the country in May 2010?"

He should ask him how the tractor production is coming along. After all, it's the standard Brown response to any and all questions.

He will ask whether the PM has the courage to defend his policies and put up a candidate against him

There's no point in Mr. Davis asking Brown anything. Do you think he will receive a clear, concise and honest reply?

David can ask whatever question he likes and it may be embarrassing for Brown, especially if he can include some evidence within it to add veracity, but Brown can effectively ignore it and make his own propaganda statement in reply. Unlike party leaders a backbench MP cannot challenge or follow up his question. So any impact by Davis is likely to be minimal.

This really is why PMQs are a waste of time except for 10 minutes between the party leaders. The only embarrassing thing for Brown is if other ('rebel') labour MPs take him up on the same issue. Will Gorbals call them though?

He should challenge Brown, or a member of the cabinet, to a live debate about this issue on national tv. It would be fascinating.

The public interest is obviously there.

Why, given the PMs concern for civil liberties here and abroad, was his reaction to my decision to resign and stand for re-election on the issue of the undermining of civil liberties by this government, so ungracious by calling it a 'political stunt'. What message would he then have for those thousands of British citizens who have supported my stance, and why will he not join me on the hustings to debate this crucial issue for our nation, rather than cowardly hiding behind the shoddy excuse for political process he oversaw last week in the 42day vote?

perhaps not snappy or sexy but just make the case ....
maybe just explain why the rest of the western world can detain without charge for a couple or handful of days at most and yet face EXACTLY the threat we have to have 6 weeks for .....
maybe show how they have it wrong and Gordon knows best ....
maybe ask how the abscence in other countries of an ID card scheme, DNA database, spy cams everywhere has reduced thier security ....
maybe offer us some understanding of how others have repsonded and what we can learn from thier errors and issues(although they dont realise it they obviously need educating too in how they need 42 days, ID cards, cameras etc etc to be as secure as us)..
Mr Speajker, can the PM just make a simple case please

The question should be:
"Has the Prime Minister ever read George Orwell's 1984, and if he has, does he regard it as a warning, or a guide for how to run the country?

As soon as Gordon Brown stands up to tell the house that tractor production is up and that the petrol ration will be increased from £2 to £1, he should simply start a chant in the House of Commons... "Down with Big Brother, Down with Big Brother."

Well let’s draw some of the teeth from the Beloved Leader’s planted questions and ripostes to others.

As Chuck says, tractor production is indeed up again. 600,000 million, million, UK children have been lifted from poverty this month. Africa is indeed again saved this month, together with whole of Asia. Afghani farmers have written a letter of thanks to the Beloved Leader, endorsed by the Kurds, and Presy. Bush.

The Bank of England reports record levels of savings and lending by, and to, impoverished English peasants (though Welsh and Scots ones are doing nicely thanks). And Britain leads the world in ooman roights legislation and payoffs to lawyers of that kind, elf ‘n safety laws, an’ stuff. Oh yes, and all knives and offensive weapons have been ‘anded by yoofs.

There, that clears the ground and leaves the way open for DD to ask his question.

WHY IS THE PRIME MINISTER ABSENT FROM THE CHAMBER TODAY?

My suggestion (although I Agree he has zero chance of being called) - treat the Dear Leader with the contempt he deserves by ignoring him......
