Clegg should go to David Davis's constituency immediately

James Forsyth 4:27pm

Nick Clegg should be on his way to Haltemprice & Howden right now with the aim of canvassing for David Davis on the first day of his campaign. Clegg’s aim should be to cause as much mischief as possible by fanning the flames of any Tory splits story. If Clegg appeared with Davis before Cameron then the press pack would start sniffing around this story.

"Clegg should go to David Davis's constituency immediately"

And stay there.

Interesting, but in whose interests are you suggesting this?
I would have posted a different piece of advice, but to Cameron.
Cameron should wake up, see that Davis has fanned a flame and get up there with the Shadow Cabinet and show that there are no Tory splits.
If Cameron is a canny politician as some think he will realise that Davis has bounced him forward on this and will try to make it look as if he doesn't mind.

Of course maybe he really doesn't mind, but I suspect that Cameron is a bit of a wimp on policy. And Davis isn't.

Why are you trying to play up the splits within the Tory party? I thought The Spectator was a Tory supporting magazine, that is why I read it!

Thank you for this. For reasons that need not detain us, I have spent much of the afternoon (away from a computer) trying to remember the name of the Lib Dem Leader. But, for the life of me, I couldn't. Seriously.

Honestly James, when are you Westminster types going to start getting it? The press pack may or may not sniff around your fantasy story but the British public could not care less whether Clegg or Cameron is the first to arrive in H&H.

All this tactical nonsense turns people off politics, can we have something on issues please? Goodness knows there are enough of them for you to write about

James, I think you are being mischievous and having some fun with all this. So would I be though from a completely different standpoint. At the end of the day, though, all you Speccie types are hopeless Cameron groupies (you have to be to avoid the sack.)

On the other hand I am really enjoying all this as day after day as it unfolds, Dave is being exposed as the shallow, callow, focus group lightweight he really is, was and always will be.
