Blair at 33/1 to be next Labour leader

Peter Hoskin 4:24pm

After Labour's disastrous showing in Henley, William Hill have re-calibrated their odds for when Brown will leave office and for who will succeed him.

Miliband's favourite to be the next party leader (at 3/1), but Tony Blair's odds have suddenly been cut from 100/1 to 33/1, after a flurry of punter interest.  Maybe it's just one for the silly season, but I'm sure quite a few Labour MPs would be more than happy to have Brown's predecessor back in No.10.

DRAFT BLAIR NOW!

I think it would be just as risky for NuLab if Blair were to return to Downing Street. He has lost all credibility, his consort has published her book. The public has, finally, wised up. Anyway, he's earning far too much cash now to even remotely consider it.

Blair is shrewder than that. He's got everything that he wants out of his time as PM. The icing on the cake for him will be to see Brown and his band of backstabbers going down the tubes at the next election.

Next step is to replace the Kinnocks at the EU and on to the Presidency. Mandelson is already working on that in a big way.

Don't be so silly. If Blair were to return, ZanuLabour would be a laughing stock for a generation, and even more unelectable than they already are - for all the reasons stated cogently above by Chuck, but even more so because they'd just look so ... useless. I mean, even more useless.

of course TB could go down as one of the greatest PMs of modern times - just as Reagan "did for" the USSR, maybe TB's ploy all along was to finally destroy socialism as a concept and consign that to the dustbin of history.... just a thought

Who put these ridiculous odds together?

Do these betting odds take into the account the fact that Blair would never in a million years have his previous job back.

Blair is actually enjoying life now, and earning loads of cash.

He'd have to return to the Commons in a by-election. In this climate, that'd be a bit of a challenge!

The odds on a horse shorten when someone puts money on it. This is so that the bookie can cover his position. I know this because I once ran a book on whowould be Captain of the School and managed to come out on the right side by the judicious manipulation of the odds in accordance with the above. THEREFORE somebody has put money on Tone. Perhaps I'll pop into Willim Hill and hazard a tenner on ... Hazel Blears! What odds would I get on her please?

On the other hand he could do like Nineteenth Century politicans and run the country from the Lords. It's so much more civilised there, with poper debate - not that he's stick around for it - and no vulgar baying from the Opposition benches. And Lady Blair has a nice ring to it don't you think? Of course, it would have to be a hereditary title, an Earlom at least so as to give Leo a courtesy title too. Oh, I'd love to see them try to get that past the Honours Committee.
