The Beijing Olympic Spirit
James Forsyth 9:08pm
There is an important piece in The Washington Post today detailing how China is imprisoning and harassing political activists in the run up to the games:
As the Olympics draw near, Chinese security officials appear to be targeting people who could channel information about rights abuses and government corruption to foreigners by publishing, as Huang's Web site does, in Chinese and English. The site, http://www.64tianwang.com, is hosted on a server in the United States and is blocked in China by government censors."The government has locked itself into a fictional account that the Chinese population has no interest in human rights and no criticism against the preparation of the Olympic Games," said Nicholas Bequelin, a Hong Kong-based researcher for Human Rights Watch.
"Since that's not the reality and thousands are involved in human rights activities, they have to silence quite a few people."
Bequelin added, "They've been very systematic, very effective."
I’d urge you to read the whole article. It is crucial that during the Olympics we never lose sight of the true, repressive nature of the Chinese regime.

July 10th, 2008 11:25pmWe should have boycotted the Olympic Games long before the torch was lit, its a disgrace, a million Chinese were also made homeless to make way for this farcical Olympics, the list of shame is endless and we are part of that shame simply by attending, we have become a democracy, hypocrisy.
For one or two Gold coins if we are lucky, we sold ourselves for thirty pieces of silver, shame on Britain.
James...I clicked on the link you added for 64tianwang.com and all the text has been replaced with question marks????????????

July 11th, 2008 1:09amWere there any real, ring-a-ding-ding "Olympics" before Nazi Germany's Neuremburg rallies?
I don't rememeber seeing any in old newsreels.
It seems as though the Olympic Torch (oh! how noble!)was picked up off the back of Neuremburg.
And ran and ran, so to speak, during the dark days of the USSR and the captive Eastern Bloc (whose children were fed drugs in order to make a good show).
The whole Olympics ghastliness is Neuremburg. The whole panoply is sick. Today, we don't look for long distance runners. We have the long distance internet. There is no point in this Naziesque glory of physical achievement.
It is so over.

July 11th, 2008 2:11amThe whole Neuremberg Rallies, Olympics glorification are Naziesque.
What are they for? No one on the planet needs long distance runners any more.
Once, we might have needed people who could pole volt - I doubt it, but I'm being kind.
But for what purpose is a mass rally of skills that haven't been required for 100 years? Who needs lots of people who can do the long jump? Or can do pointy-toed exercises in the gymnasium?
What the hell are these people for and why would any 21stC societies have the faintest interest in their Stone Age accomplishments?
It's all Nuremberg. Why is it still being promoted?

July 11th, 2008 9:41amThat's a great article and simply confirms that we should have nothing whatsoever to do with China and their 'games'.
To award the Olympic Games to China was a travesty of the Olympic spirit.....akin to awarding the games to the Nazi's in 1936.
I think it's telling that Gordon Brown feted the Chinese delegation in Downing Street but refused to meet the Dalai Llama there......for fear of upsetting the Chinese.
What an utter disgrace for a Prime Minister! :O(
Let's get rid of him!
John
July 11th, 2008 10:20amNot sure why we are not boycotting these corrupt 'games' in a vicious fascist country.

July 11th, 2008 1:32pmSilent Hunter "travesty of the Olympic Spirit"? What? The Olympic Spirit has always been greed. It's a myth to get people to go along with the programme of spending vast, unimaginable amounts of money for absolutely nothing.

July 11th, 2008 2:50pmLook - the Chinese got the contract fair and square. They offered the biggest bribe to those upstanding men in mustard-coloured polyester blazers.
Gordon Brown is a terribly stupid man and his advisors are ignorant louts. He could have entertained the Dalai Lama at No 10 and the Chinese wouldn't have been mortally offended. Maybe a slight huff, but nothing serious.
The Dalai Lama is not the leader of the Free Tibet movement. He has said specifically and clearly that all he wants for Tibet is cultural autonomy and religious freedom. He is not seeking independence.
He's a pragmatic man. Gordon Brown's an ignorant man.

July 12th, 2008 12:03amVerity & Marian C:
I am not speaking of what the Olympics have become under Big Corporate Business.........I refer to the original ideals of the Olympic movement.
Of bringing nations together for 'sport' as a way of opposing warfare between nations.
Of fair play and support for the underdog and those who struggle and yet achieve.
Forgive me Verity but you are pushing against an open door with me :O) I wholly concur with your views about China.
'...the Chinese got the contract fair and square..... They offered the biggest bribe...'
That is an oxymoronic statement don't you think?
Verity
July 12th, 2008 4:09amSilent - yes, oxymoronic if you get the point.
"Of bringing nations together for 'sport' as a way of opposing warfare between nations."
Oh, excuse me, Clive, sir, but instead of colonising India and making us, India and the entire world richer, and getting curries thrown in as a bonus, would it not be more emollient to have a long jump competition?"
Clive, stroking chin: "Hmmmm ... I see what you mean."
(In French): "Oh, Sire, instead of founding the state of Louisiana and making the Louisiana Purchase and enabling truly fab Cajun food and Cajun music, shouldn't we instead have a competition to see who is the fastest at running round an absolutely pointless track for what seems like hours?"
Of fair play and support for the underdog and those who struggle and yet achieve.
Since when is it my business, through billions of pounds, to support underdogs on powerful steroids? Or not on steroids? Why would I want to do this?
There is no "Olympic ideal". The original "Olympic movement" as you term it was 2,000 years ago. Can you name me something, in the human chain of events, that has lasted, uncorrupted, for 2,000 years?
Do not be ridiculous.

July 12th, 2008 5:16pmGoodness me!
Have I caught you at the wrong time in your cycle, dear? LOL
'....Can you name me something, in the human chain of events, that has lasted, uncorrupted, for 2,000 years?....'
Clearly not reasoned argument in your case.
Wouldn't you be more at home at Guido's place.......I believe ranting and raving are 'de rigour' there. ;O)

July 13th, 2008 3:03pmI want to register an objection to the offensively personal and sexist comment from Silent Hunter that is intended to devalue my post for no other reason than that I'm a woman: "Have I caught you at the wrong time in your cycle, dear? LOL".
Women will not comment here if an opinion contrary to that of posting pond life that is too weak to brook a contrary argument is ascribed to their being women.
In addition, Silent Hunter, you intrusive, patronising slimeball, do not have the impertinence to address me as "my dear". You're one of those office perverts who, when bending over a woman's desk, puts a "friendly" arm around her shoulders, aren't you? You sleazy little creep.
Referring to the now-degenerate Olympic Games, I asked this reasonable question of fellow bloggers: "....Can you name me something, in the human chain of events, that has lasted, uncorrupted, for 2,000 years?...."
The mouth-breather Silent Hunter, unable to give a sane answer, writes: "Clearly not reasoned argument in your case." Would it be a reaoned argument in someone else's case, then? A man's case, for example?
Coffee House attracts more women bloggers than any other Conservative blog and they are all articulate and direct. If a knuckle-dragger such as your good self cannot manage under these circumstances, I suggest you guard your needy ego by posting elsewhere.
