David Davis gets the decent turnout he needed

James Forsyth 8:19am

David Davis cruised to victory last night in the Haltemprice and Howden by-election with 72 percent of the vote on a 34 percent turnout. Turnout was high enough for Davis to avoid embarrassment and attests to his popularity in his constituency. But one is still left wondering why he resigned as an MP forfeiting the chance to be the next Home Secretary to fight this by-election when his own party’s position was the same as his.

The question now becomes will Cameron bring Davis back. It is clear that Cameron will not reshuffle straight away to return Davis to his team, he doesn’t need to and Davis’s rash actions have made lots of those around the party leader even more wary of him. Davis himself is not agitating for an immediate return; on The Today Programme this morning he once more effusively praised his successor Dominic Grieve. However, if Cameron loses a shadow cabinet member to a scandal and has to reshuffle then all attention will be on whether or not Cameron brings back Davis.

Standards are dropping if 34% is a decent turnout.

Would he make a better chairman than Spelman?

James,
"one is still left wondering why he resigned as an MP forfeiting the chance to be the next Home Secretary to fight this by-election when his own party’s position was the same as his"

it's because he did not judge his career more important than the unfettered opportunity to crusade on freedom issues from the back bench.

I am constantly bemused by the failure to recognise that there may be one or two politicians who do not have their own advancement as the sole purpose of their political life.

Is there no place in society for a few honest people?

I am very pleased at this result; the turnout is cetainly good enough.

But why are you left wondering why he resigned?
He did it because he did not believe that Cameron would give sufficient priority to these issues.
So he decided to bring these issues to the forefront.
Well done David Davis.

Do you think he cares whether or not he's on the front bench?
It's the issues, not the job.

Having said that, the role of Party Chairman where he can talk about anything and inspire the activists might be appealing to both Davis and Cameron.

34% must be a good turnout; to Brown 18% represents the 'majority'.

Well all the folk in our local Co-op this morning were talking of nothing else. That would be the special offer of two for one on the oven ready chips, as for this silly chap no one gave a rats.

Whilst, obviously, everyone is at pains to deny any differences of opinion between Cameron and Davis, I suspect that there may nevertheless be fundamental disagreements between them (such as about the Conservative policy towards the EU) which Davis felt he would be better able to express from outside the front bench.

I was intrigued to hear DD say that he would be able to comment on such other issues as social mobility (read - grammar schools and tax and spend) and some foreign issues like Afghanistan and Europe!

Now he's outside DD has a lot of pissing in to do.

DD acted on a matter or principle - a concept which is alien to the meeja and Westminster Village. Don't try to make an issue of something where none exists. DD neither expects nor wants a position on the Front Bench - both he and DC have made it clear that that will not happen - NO discord there, apart from the one which the meeja is trying to forment

Wasn’t Churchill accused of War mongering prior to the Germans invading Poland? And did Hitler not arrive at our door? Now David Davies is accused of insanity and egotistic pomp, whilst we all watch our civil liberties and the big brother strangulation take hold on our society, only those awake and caring enough can see where this is all going, maybe those who don’t, don’t care, but when your country becomes your enemy, all that we stood for will mean nothing.

This is not a Crusade, its a warning to us all and morally the right position to take against a Government that cares as much about civil liberties as those watching Big Brother and Eastenders.

Congratulations David, the Circus is over, now hopefully you can get on with the job at hand.

Mike........I hope you're going to 'do your bit for Labour' when the election comes and start canvassing for them.

Only I would take a lead from Harriet SelfHarmer and wear a stab proof vest.
Something tells me that Labour supporters will not be getting an easy time of it on the doorstep of middle Britain. LOL

Liz: Spot on! :O)

DC: "Calm down David, we'll make you a czaaarrrr-a-a-a-ahhhh-a-a-a-ahhh-a-a-a-hhh!

Bwaahahahaha!

Oh my,my... what I could have done with the hundreds of thousands spent on this exercise in stupidity. How much longer do we have to submit to extortionate taxes to fund such travesties; to tear the whole panoply of faux-democracy down with our bare hands?
