Thank you for the music

Sarah Standing 2:57pm

There's no denying we are heading into a major recession. The newspapers are full of doom and gloom, inflation rates are sky-high, there's an epidemic of knife crime, global warming weather seems to have totally bypassed England and yet everyone I met this weekend who'd been to see Abba's Mamma Mia was grinning from ear to ear and in an exceptionally good mood. Having seen the movie myself (twice in the last 48 hours) I can see why. This is a film that doesn't promise to deliver anything other than two hours of undiluted, infectious, joyous escapism. It's not champagne for the brain but it's definitely a serotonin-charged bit of much-needed hope for the heart.

Can't wait to see it either!
But I feel the need to add to your list of failings the poor kids who have had their SATS results lost in the post, or left out in the pissing rain for a week etc.

Absolutely splendid fare, even if Piers Brosnan singing is rather an acquired taste. Meryl Streep surprisingly good however.

I'd right like musicals me but why does some bugger have to sing every five minutes?

Eh?

We keep hearing that there is an epidemic of knife crime, but this has the flavour of the media trying to out-do each other for the latest bit of zeitgeist - in much the same way that paedophilia was a few years ago.

' According to the British Crime Survey (BCS), overall violent crime has decreased by 41% since a peak in 1995.

Knives are used in about 8% of violent incidents, according to the BCS, a level that has largely remained the same during the past decade.

Whilst admitting that knife crime is bad and wrong, it does also feel over-stated, especially with the politicians doing their best to appear to be 'tough'.

All other reviews I've read say it is a pathetic waste of time and money. Go on, waste your day!
