A decreased lead for the Tories, but more bad news for Brown

Peter Hoskin 7:06pm

The Guardian have just published their latest ICM poll.  The headline numbers: the Tories are on 43 percent (down 2 from last month); Labour on 28 percent (up 3); and the Lib Dems on 19 percent (down 1).  So Labour have cut into the Tory lead.

When you look at the other findings, though, the picture looks bleaker for Brown.  The vast majority of respondents think the UK's heading towards a recession.  And, when asked who they trust to run the economy, 46 percent picked Cameron and Osborne, compared to only 27 percent for Brown and Darling.

It's a similar story to the Times/Populus poll of a couple of weeks ago. The combination of an improved Labour position with low public confidence in Brown could be toxic for the Prime Minister.  As James wrote then: "the implication will not be lost on Labour MPs in marginal seats: if they change leader they might just have a chance".

Come on, Con down 2 Lab up 3 is hardly a recovery. It is within the margin of error. Stop being so biased toward Labour.

Carrie:
It's a poll commissioned by the Guardian.......so no surprise that it paints Labour in a rosy light.

I prefer to rely on YouGov polls which consistently get it right......they have Labour as 'no change' which is ironic when you think about it; No one's likely to have any 'change' after they've paid for all the rising bills thanks to ZaNuLabours incompetence with the British economy. LOL

I see that Brown is promising another "fight-back" in October. My heart sinks at the prospect of yet more crass initiatives and puerile legislation, hearing over and over that asinine government cliché that "a message must be sent" and that this, that or the other thing are "unacceptable".

No doubt the "fight-back" from this wretched, unwelcome and unwanted occupant of No.10 will be more dour sermonising from the pulpit. Blair's "trendy vicar" act followed by Brown's "17th century puritan" one is too much.

There's noting pro-Labour about the Guardian at the moment. Even this poll's headline was edited to remove anything positive for Labour from it. But then anybody who writes "ZaNuLabour" obviously has a problem with reality.

Speaking to a staunch, lifelong Labour supporter at the w/e she told me she put Brown in the same category as Michael Foot - i.e.unelectable. That is a dramatic change since I last spoke to her in September, when Brown walked on water. It's the same story with other Labour supporters I know - a sign things are now terminal for Brown. If Labour is reading ICMs marginal decrease in the Tory lead as some sign of a recovery then they really are clutching at straw (polls).

Labour matters?

No.....It clearly doesn't.

I can spot a Labour Troll a mile off. LOL
Obviously you don't read the Guardian on a regular basis - in particular the likes of Polly Toynbee constantly wringing her hands about the fate of the poor whilst writing her articles and e-mailing them in from her Tuscan Villa.

How very 'New Labour' of her.
