The Sunday Essay: send in your submissions

Peter Hoskin 5:17pm

We're introducing a new feature to Coffee House - the Sunday Essay.   Each Sunday, we'll post an essay by one of our readers, on any political, cultural or sporting topic.  The first essay will appear on Sunday, 10 August.

If you'd like your writing to be considered, just e-mail an article of between 500 and 1500 words to me at phoskin @ spectator.co.uk  - the Coffee House team will pick out the best submission each week, and post it on the website the following Sunday.  It doesn't matter whether you're an MP, a member of the policy wonk world, or have nothing to do with politics whatsoever - all submissions will be read and evaluated.

So, get writing.  And remember to look out for the first Sunday Essay next week.

Whata superb idea! However, given that politicians and policy wonks already have plenty of fora in which to air their views, I would respectfully urge that The Spectator bias their selections in favour of those who hail from completely outside the goldfish bowl of Westminster, Fleet Street or the professional think tanks.

Is there any particular format you want/don't want it sent in? I can't write for toffee so I doubt I'll be sending anything in, but I once sent something similar to the Telegraph only to get a miserable e-mail back about it not being in the right format.

Oh, great idea, by the way. Didn't want to sound miserable and negative.

Does it HAVE to be about politics?

Like Dave, I don't want to sound miserable and negative.

I just am that's all. I think I'm pre-Olympic.

David: it's best if you send it as a MS Word document. But failing that, you could always paste it into the body of an e-mail.

Alf Tupper: no it doesn't. I've changed the post above accordingly. Basically, we'd like them to reflect the mix of topics you see on Coffee House. So politics will dominate, but there'll also be room for articles on culture, sport etc.

Martyn: No strict weekly deadline - if we get it before the Sunday, then it will be considered for that Sunday. If an essay doesn't make the cut one week, but is good and still topical the next, we'll consider it for the following Sunday as well.

Hope that clears things up!
