Family politics

James Forsyth 6:23pm

Barack Obama and John McCain are both taking questions tonight from Rick Warren (pictured left), the evangelical preacher, at his Saddleback church. Normally, such a forum would be good for the Republican candidate and bad for the Democrat. But this rule might not apply this time. First, Obama is more comfortable talking about his faith than McCain is. Second, Rick Warren is a new kind of evangelical—his political interests go beyond abortion and gay marriage. Finally, Warren intends to ask the candidates questions about their private lives. This is a potentially tricky subject for McCain who divorced his first wife after returning from his ordeal in Vietnam and married a younger woman. By contrast, Obama’s family life is pretty much perfect. This ad from a pro-Obama Christian group draws an implicit contrast on this issue.
There has been a lot of speculation about how much of the evangelical vote Obama can win over. Clearly, Obama is better positioned to win support from them than, say, John Kerry was. But I still think that Reverend Wright and abortion are going to keep a lid on how many votes Obama can garner from this group.

Why are you seemingly willing defeat for McCain at the hands of a vacuous, far-left ninny? McCain's not the perfect candidate for the right, but he's surely the lesser of two evils. Anyway, it appears that, contrary to your expectations, Obama was every bit as crap as I would have hoped, and McCain exuded far more gravitas. Barry's lowlight, answering a question about abortion: 'That's above my pay grade.' Watch that one take off and fly!

Yet Obama came off as a moral relativist ninny, with little substance, and McCain showed strong character.
