Hillary down for the count

Wednesday, 20th February 2008

Hillary Clinton is not out yet but she is on the canvass with the count past five. Obama has the momentum—ten straight wins will give you that—and the money, he has just doubled Hillary’s ad buy in Ohio. At the moment, Obama is well on the way to the March 4th victories in Hillary’s supposed firewalls of Texas and Ohio that would effectively end the race.

In these circumstances, Hillary has to take risks if she is to turn things round. In the debates on Thursday and Tuesday she has to try and expose Obama’s weaknesses, even if that risks her coming off as small or shrill. She has to attack Obama directly by asking what he has actually achieved.  Finally, she is going to have to stress to voters that this is it, if they vote for Obama now he will be the nominee.

The problem with throwing these haymakers is that it leaves her acutely vulnerable to a well delivered uppercut. But if she doesn’t do this, she has no chance of winning.

Without a political stake, the Clintons, like Richard Nixon, are never dead. The video in the following post will certainly help them particularly if they use it as an ad or as part of their internet campaign. Michelle Obama also seems to be doing her bit for the sisterhood with a mouthy interview and the priceless quote "I have never before been proud of my country." Must look what at what the odds are on Hillary.

And what exactly has Hillary achived? Here's Dick Morris on her legislative record: "Her legislative accomplishments in her first term in the Senate were almost entirely symbolic. She renamed a courthouse after Justice Thurgood Marshall. She passed a resolution honoring Alexander Hamilton and another celebrating the win of a Syracuse University lacrosse team. She renamed post offices, founded a national park in Puerto Rico and expressed the sense of the Senate that Harriet Tubman should have gotten a federal pension 150 years ago. Her only actual legislation included one bill to increase nurse recruitment, another to aid respite time for Alzheimer’s care givers and another to expand veterans’ health benefits, a paltry output for six years’ service. In her second term, she has spent full-time campaigning for president and has the worst attendance record of the three senators now still in the presidential race."
