Who else reckons that Mr Darling's plodding budget could have used a lively soundtrack? Well, here's my recommendation: Goody Two Shoes by Adam and the Ants. The lyrics pretty much sum up the whole sorry affair!

"Put on a little makeup makeup
Make sure they get your good side good side

If the words unspoken
Get stuck in your throat
Send a treasure token token
Write it on a pound note pound note

Goody two goody two goody goody two shoes Goody two goody two goody goody two shoes Don't drink don't smoke - what do you do Don't drink don't smoke - what do you do

Subtle innuendos follow.

There must be something he's hiding"

There will be a few more people not smoking and drinking with the 11p and 55p(!) hikes.

If Mr 'Goody Two Shoes' Darling's noble intention in raising alcohol duty is to curb the nation's excessive drinking habits, then why is it that in the UK we already pay more for our alcohol than in any other European country (with the possible exceptions of Norway and Sweden)? And yet we continue to out-binge our neighbours undeterred. Confused logic? Not a bit of it. Moreover cynical opportunism. Goody Two Shoes knows exactly what he is doing. Sniffing around for yet another stealth tax (as ever, dressed up as a morally commendable piece of legislation), he has raised alcohol prices 6% across the board. In the process he punishes the majority to deter an apparently irresponsible minority. I, for one, like to 'binge' on approximately one bottle of wine most nights of the week, and all without resorting to antisocial behaviour. It's one of my few reliable pleasures in life and,I suspect, I am far from alone in my habit. So, am I about to curb my indulgence as a result of 6% hike in revenue? Of course not. Along with everybody else of modest means,I'll simply continue drinking and absorb the financial blow, along with all the other financial blows, until, eventually, something gives.

"Move Over, Darling" by Doris Day too obvious, one supposes. Actually there is a song called "And Darling" by Canadian twins Tegan & Sarah which includes such deathless lines as "Creep up and tell me that you love me more" and better yet "You put your hand inside my pockets".

All this talk of "Goody" reminds me of Jane Goody and the burning question why Gordon Brown has not yet hired her as a special adviser?
