MPs vote against an above-inflation pay rise

Now this is the right outcome. We've just got to hope that MPs are similarly conscientious when it comes voting on changes to the expenses system later.

July 3rd, 2008 10:20pmNeither was the right outcome. They got it precisely the wrong way round. MPS should be paid a (substantially)higher basic, be barred from moonlighting, meet the costs of a second home from that higher basic, account for their expenses normally and close their pension scheme to future accrual and new entrants.
It's simply daft that MPS are only paid £60k-odd. And it's even more daft that they can claim for decking out their houses as an expense of the job. I need a house in or near London to do my job, too, but the shareholders of the company I work for don't see fit to pay for my kitchen.
