Mamet arrives at Planet Reality

The article by David Mamet in which he reveals how he stopped being a brain dead liberal or leftie when he was finally mugged by reality contains the (for me) arresting observation:

And, I wondered, how could I have spent decades thinking that I thought everything was always wrong at the same time that I thought I thought that people were basically good at heart? Which was it? I began to question what I actually thought and found that I do not think that people are basically good at heart; indeed, that view of human nature has both prompted and informed my writing for the last 40 years. I think that people, in circumstances of stress, can behave like swine, and that this, indeed, is not only a fit subject, but the only subject, of drama.
Leaving aside the ability to write plays of international stature, along with a view of human nature that for me is too black (since I think people are capable of both good and evil), Mamet identifies one of the multitudinous and self-evident contradictions which prompted me to embark on my own 25-year headlong flight from Planet Kafka. Now there’s the stuff of drama…

This was always the problem with the 'soft' left...the complete disregard for human nature, the eternal seeking for an ideal that can never happen instead of adjusting and adapting to the real world...the hard left, the fascists all knew and exploited it to the full.

Some people come to the same conclusion about the age of 16. Still better late than never I suppose.

Check the comments to see what sort of people Mamet has left behind. Of course, some of mamet's compatriots pretty much figured this out about the time that we noticed a lot of leftists thought the Viet Cong were basically agrarian reformers who wrote poetry in their spare time.

Does this mean that you are finally admitting to being a conservative (something which the rest of us have known for years!)

Talking of people who should know better: How very very shaming to hear the Foreign Office Minister on radio today talking of how he was hoping things in Tibet would return to normal very soon. Presumably he means normal as in kidnapping of religious leaders, denial of democracy, torturing of dissidents, ethnic cleansing, shooting refugees in cold blood, denial of free speech and calculated insults to Tibetan culture: in short as the wise and venerable Dalia Lama says, cultural genocide - because that's the normality in Tibet. Who is Lord Malloch-Brown to offer up the Tibetan people for sacrifice on the altar of the UK economy and international stability. Freedom is indivisible. The Tibetans deserve it as much as we do.

maybe this explains his late conversion...........Churchill-"Any man who is under 30, and is not a liberal, has no heart; and any man who is over 30, and is not a conservative, has no brains."

I am so glad I read this blog. First and foremost for Melanie's wise words and her stunningly concise and sparse prose-and then I get the added value of the thoughts of posters like Field & Pete Woodhouse and Andy Gill below, which affirms to me, that I'm not going mad, and I'm not alone in thinking as I do. To echo Andy, better late than never David.

"Does this mean that you are finally admitting to being a conservative (something which the rest of us have known for years!)" -- what utter nonsense. First of all, the breathtaking arrogance of speaking for 'the rest of us'. Nobody has appointed you to speak for me, matey. Secondly, recognising the so-called 'liberal' left's innate fascism-cum-stupidity is not being 'conservative' but sane and intelligent - and a true liberal.

'Pinch yourself. This is Britain.' Is Melanie Phillips aware that Britain is now a multicultural society? and that its economy thrives on the input of immigrants from all over the world? including muslims? her heavily biased article neglects to inform that muslims are persecuted too, on a daily basis all over Britain. Racism comes from all colours, creeds and religions. Something miss phillips, and the rest of us, would do well to remember.

Ann

March 18th, 2008 12:26pm

Not taken your pills today, Naomi? If Muslims feel 'persecuted' in this country, they needn't exhibit such enthusiasm to come here in their millions - which they do. Wooly-headed Islingtonites like you are blind to the racist persecution of white Brits in their own country.

So all the muslims who have been living here for generations should just pack and go 'home' should they? wherever that maybe. and i'm blind to racism inflicted on white britains am i? racism comes from both sides i said! but yr in the 21st Century, the fascist belief that white people have supreme rights died out half a century ago my dear. and for good reason. it's called progress.

oops commented on wrong article!

Ann

"So all the muslims who have been living here for generations should just pack and go 'home' should they?" --- isn't that just like a typical leftie fascist to put words in my mouth so you can then paint me as a racist. I never said that. Moreover, I never said anything remotely like that. What I said, in case you are incapable of comprehending simple English, is that if it's so bad for them here, why are so many of them coming here NOW? Now as in '2008', dear. Can you grasp that? ---- The typical behaviour of leftie airheads is that when someone accuses a non-white of racism, they scream: But what about racism from white people? They attempt to deflect the debate in this way, and it is an outright racist gambit.

Ann, you are an imbecile.

Ann

Doug, did you finish primary school? Your problem seems to be with reading comprehension - unless it's one of a negative IQ.

Re Ann's imbecility. Ann objects because Naomi suggested that Ann thought muslims “should just pack up and go home”. Ann complains that this “paints (her) as a racist”. In fact Ann's views are somewhat more radical than this: she thinks in fact that they should be expelled. On the “Jihad in East Londonistan” thread, I wrote that the remarks of another poster, Jean Breban, appeared to suggest he/she wanted to kick muslims out. Jean however denied this saying, “You just cannot”. Ann then posted “And why not, Jean, pray? To state "You just cannot" is rubbish. One can.” Looks to me like Ann wants to expel muslims, even if Jean does not. Comments Ann?

So Ben "has a first in English degree"? Well done, Ben - and thanks for confirming the results inflation in academe!

ok, i was just pointing out that melanie phillips article was heavily biased and sloppy journalism. apologies for implying yr racist, clearly yr not. btw ann, i'm white, so clearly a racist against white people!

'i have a first in english degree'

Such a beautifully honed phrase...

..and such excoriating political analysis. Truly we are in the presence of someone quite special. Thank you, thank you Ben. Please post more..and soon!!

Ann

"To be fair to doug and naomi, i have a first in english degree and i think you're an imbecile ann" - can't construct a sentence, can't use uppercase, and claims to have 'a first in english degree' (sic). I don't believe you have a single GCSE, little boy. You are not just an imbecile but an illiterate imbecile.

Ann

March 20th, 2008 1:13pm

A Chaffey, you are talking rubbish. Look up the difference between 'can' and 'should'. I stated that one can: and indeed, one can. Not once did I suggest that one should, nor that I support such a thing. To deduce this from what I said is a typical demagogic trick, known as a strawman (unless it's a simple matter of poor reading comprehension on your part).

Naomi, perhaps it may interest you to learn that the most persecuted minority in the UK is the Jews, who are more likely to be victims of violent assault than any other ethnic group. It may also interest you that the largest number of these assault are carried out by Musilms (who, by and large, have not been in the UK "for generations" as you suggest). It is also my experience that those who espouse the virtues of a "multicultural" society live in predominantly white, middle class areas, with white, middle class neighbours. Ann was just speaking common sense. And Ben, what an arrogant idiot you are. We all bow down before such a towering intellect.

March 24th, 2008 7:37am

Ann, I think if you don't in fact want to expel muslims, you have expressed yourself rather carelessly. My sense however is that you are simply finding it convenient to shift your position. I understand that position now to be that we could expel muslims (if we wanted to), but that personally you would not favour it. Previously, in response to the suggestion that expelling muslims wasn't possible, you insisted that "One can". You were I thought quite vehement about it. To give your words in full, “And why not, Jean, pray? To state "You just cannot" is rubbish. One can.” I see no "we-coulds" here, no "but-I would-oppose-it" qualifications, simply "one can". I'm afraid this sounds more like a call for action (ie for expulsion) than the musings of someone who is actually quite opposed to the idea. Comments again?

Re explusion of muslims. The strongest comments about muslims and about Islam today seem to come from people who are sympathetic to Zionism. It's ironic therefore that whilst most of those who are sympathetic to Zionism continue to deny that explusions took place around 1948 at the time Israel was created, some of their number seem to be hoping for a repeat.
