I have often referred to the baleful influence of Haaretz on Israel’s reputation through the writings of a number of its correspondents who promulgate the most vicious distortions about their country. Yet even I am left open mouthed by this account of the lies it published recently in a story by Gideon Levy about Palestinian children being deprived of swimming pools, to the extent that allegedly none of them could swim without life preservers. As you will see from the CAMERA article, a multitude of pictures in themselves (similar to the one above of a swimming pool in Jenin) tell a very different story, as did a previous piece in Haaretz itself:
Nowadays, every city in the West Bank has a pool or a recreational complex: Bethlehem has one similar to Al-Khaluf [a clover-leaf-shaped pool in Dura, near Hebron], while Ramallah has more than 10.One of Jenin's swimming champs committed a suicide bombing at Jerusalem's Sbarro restaurant in August 2001. Nablus has a pool reserved for women, and an Olympic pool. Another pool and recreation complex sits between Nablus and Tubas. Al Khaluf draws more than 2,500 people on an average weekend day, [lifeguard Ahmed] Rajoub says. (‘West Bank swimming pools help Palestinians brave the heat’).I really cannot fathom such journalistic wickedness and pathological national self-hatred as displayed by Haaretz, to the extent that its own output becomes totally incoherent and indeed absurd.

May 5th, 2008 4:26pmyes and there were "pictures" of Jews enjoying themselves in Dachau too, were there not ? The way history repeats itself is quite spooky.

May 5th, 2008 6:30pmIt's quite amazing isn't it, "paul quite-tall", that those "Palestinians", against whom Israel is committing genocide, have a rapidly growing population and the lowest infant mortality rate of all the Middle East?
Those Jews obviously still have a lot to learn about "ethnic cleansing".
The only way history is repeating itself in this case is the manner in which antisemitic hate speech such as yours is once again acceptable among people who consider themselves to be decent human beings.
gurbach
May 5th, 2008 6:31pmActually - the Palestinians are the ones famous for virtual reality. See - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paliwood. On the other hand paul quite-tall is an anti Semite midget.

May 5th, 2008 6:54pmNice to see the Nazi inversion surface so early on this thread. Do you have evidence, Paul, that the pictures are faked? How do you feel about the faking of pictures by French TV and Reuters "documenting" Israel's supposed atrocities, but which have been exposed as hoaxes?
Soreofhing
May 5th, 2008 7:00pmOf course Israeli sports complexes have swimming pools.
They are full of water that Israel illegally pumps out of the occupied West Bank .
paul is a dope
May 5th, 2008 8:06pmSorry "Paul quite-tall," but Dachau pictures were produced or choreographed by the Nazis. These pool pictures are taken in areas under the control of the PA, and taken by photographers from such pro-Israel outlets as the AP and al-Reuters, in some cases by Palestinian photographers. The same pro-Israel al-Reuters, BTW, that published those phony anti-Israel photos from Lebanon a few years ago!

May 5th, 2008 11:27pmWhat an absolute load of tosh. The majority of the Gaza strip is less than 5km from the warm Mediterranean sea, where swimming is no problem.
Some of the talkbacks on Haaretz are pretty viscous and self hating too.
I have mostly stopped reading it.

How many examples of Israeli barbarity, murder, illegal annexation and occupation do you need to be reminded of before you reluctantly agree that Israel is not squeaky clean?

May 6th, 2008 11:21amIn a strange way Melanie he does the cause of the preservation of Israel a great service. The rabid and montrous lies can be quickly shown for the insanity that it is and further highlights the need for truth.Let him write his garbage and then let the truth come through until such brutal and sickening liers are driven from the battlefield.

I guess the word 'hypocrite' does not register in her otherwise extensive vocab?

May 6th, 2008 3:46pmHow do we know that the picture is of a swimming-pool in Jenin ? Melanie Phillips' word on it ??!!!
Even if it is (and it may well be), a Palestinian boy dives into a pool in Jenin so all is ok ? The land theft can continue ?
In fifty years will all the haters in this thread be going: "but we didn't know..."

May 6th, 2008 5:23pm"The land theft can continue?" -
well, no: the land theft perpetrated by your darlings the Arabs in a country that is not theirs, one that they occupied in their murderous campaign from Arabia (hint: Arabs come from Arabia) and across the ME and North Africa, during which they colonised Israel, is now at an end. Live with it.

May 6th, 2008 5:57pmMichael .I don't know where you appeared from but I will take your judgement on arrogance if that makes you feel better, but I will take my own on contempt and agree I do have that for people like you and your like -your judgement usually comes with a total lack of knowledge but with much venom -nothing ever is constructive or questioning ,just pure hate -so enjoy the contempt its good for you - you could of course tell me what my post had to do with your accusations as having read it again I cant see any political comments at all ,just a message to real people to ignore the idiots who post hate on this thread
Adam B.
May 6th, 2008 6:29pmPaul, so Jenin is Auschwitz is it? If you think that, there is no point engaging with you, you are beyond hope. I will ask my question again, which you haven't answered - where is the evidence for your disgusting contention?
Adam B.
May 6th, 2008 6:30pmPatricia, all you ever do is go "HAHA" and then make some hateful jibe. Such insight. What a towering intellect, so original, so thoughtful.

May 6th, 2008 6:32pmMichael, obviously everyone who doesn't share your world view must be "arrogant". Phil, if you've been a regular reader, is about the kindest, least arrogant person to write on these comments!

May 6th, 2008 8:00pmAdam B thanks -you are a far better judge than Michael :)
patricia and her new "husband " sorething are just jokes .most like them just come for a quick burst of venom and then disappear -we who take this seriously learn a lot even when we don't like what we hear,so I find it fascinating ,some of the posters are so knowledgeable and write so beautifully it makes it all worth while -so Kate A if you read this come back soon -and thanks to Melanie for affording us this opportunity to express ourselves- best regards to most of you Phil

May 6th, 2008 10:10pmI have been watching as many of you engage in some form of repartee with antisemites. This may amuse you but in the long run it is not productive. China reacts angrily when criticised, the Muslims react more than angrily when criticised. The only people who keep their heads down are the British Jews. When there is no cost to antisemitism it flourishes and is amplified. Think about that.
paul quite-tall
May 7th, 2008 12:02pmA Palestinina gets to dive into a pool, SO ALL IS OK. Keep building the settlements.

May 7th, 2008 12:08pm"anti-semites"
Give it a rest George, that slur has been used so often and so erroneously that it doesn't stick anymore. Nor does it have the power it should have.
(Yes, I said "should").
Adam B.
May 7th, 2008 1:07pmPaul, you've avoided my question twice now. I guess you can't admit when you're wrong. Why should anyone listen to you when you've been shown to make baseless accusations?
Ann
May 7th, 2008 1:36pm"Give it a rest George, that slur has been used so often and so erroneously that it doesn't stick anymore" -
Nope. When it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck. You can wriggle as much as you like. Pathological hatred of Jews, manifested in so many ways here and elsewhere, is called 'antisemitism'. You don't like it? Tough luck.
Shy Guy
May 7th, 2008 2:02pmGreat idea! We will continue to build new communities and expand existing ones. Thanks for your moral support.

May 7th, 2008 2:10pm"paul quite-tall" says:
"yes and there were "pictures" of Jews enjoying themselves in Dachau too, were there not ? The way history repeats itself is quite spooky."
But denies he is an antisemite.
"paul quite-tall" accuses Melanie of falsifying a photo but when proven wrong doesn't admit it.
"paul quite-tall" denies the truth when it smacks him in the face.
"paul quite-tall" hates Jews but denies he is an antismite.
Funny ol' world...

May 7th, 2008 3:44pmNice try Stanislav, the easy slur and all is ok.
Here, another piece of history repeating itself, which will allow you once again to bring out what you imagine to be the killer accusation ("off a duck's back").

May 7th, 2008 4:24pmAdam, is this the question ?: "so Jenin is Auschwitz is it?
Of course it is not and I never claimed it was. Neither do I really doubt that this is, indeed, a picture of a Palestinian boy jumping gleefully into a swimming-pool.
What I DO claim however is that the fact of one boy's delight in jumping into a pool on a hot day does not excuse 60 years of Israeli oppression, denial of rights, and continuous land theft (of which ShyGuy obviously approves).
paul quite-tall
May 7th, 2008 4:42pmAnn: "Pathological hatred of Jews"
Oh Lordy, give it a rest, or prove it.
"It's a duck": yes and your slur is like water off a duck's back.
On these perverse blog, if you don't adhere to the shrill M.Phillips version, you are an "anti-semite".
Never mind that that would make an awful lot of Jewish anti-semites.
Shy Guy
May 7th, 2008 4:44pmBoohoo. The boor Balestinians.
Read Fiddler of the Truth (or Violince in the Middle East).
Here's something else, highly relevant to this case, which Short-In-Integrity here would never want to bring to anyone's attention:
You're a disgrace, Paul.
Shy Guy
May 7th, 2008 4:47pmIsrael was not in Jenin until 1967, and even then only thanks to the Arabs' attempt to throw the Jews into the see.
There will be a denial of rights anytime you commit acts of agression again a country, which is what Arab terrorists from Jenin and everywhere else have been doing since way earlier that 1967 for that matter.
Communities in Judea and Samaria are not built on stolen land. They are built on either government land (as was defined under Jordanian law, going back to Ottoman rule) or on purchased property.
Stanislav Koblinski
May 7th, 2008 4:49pm"paul quite-tall"
What exactly are you trying to prove with a BBC article from 2004?
If you can't see why coming along here and comparing Jenin to Dachau, and in addition quoting a three year old report accusing Israel of treating Palestinians in the same way the Nazis treated Jews doesn't qualify you as an antisemite there's no point in further debate with you.
Melanie's article is about "a story by Gideon Levy about Palestinian children being deprived of swimming pools, to the extent that allegedly none of them could swim without life preservers."
That story has been shown to be untrue. It is that story, not Melanie's rebuttal, which is untrue. It is the false story that there is only one swimming pool available for Palestinians that is untrue, just as stories that Jewish prisoners enjoying themselves in Dachau are untrue.
You seem to have become confused in your attempts to invert history to make the victim the aggressor, so much so you're posting comments about this topic on another thread.
I'm sure you don't like to be called an antisemite in the same way that you probably don't think it's a "slur" to compare Jews to Nazis.
Sure, calling you an antisemite is a "slur", but I don't know of any other way to describe your attitude and your behavior.
Adam B.
May 7th, 2008 5:52pmPaul, why did you choose to cite Dachau in comparison to Jenin? It was a very deliberate choice on your part, and it is this choice that makes me question your motives. I'm glad that you admit you were spouting rubbish when you questioned the source of the photo.

May 8th, 2008 7:25pmPaul, I think you made the comparison because you like to be extremely offensive. Well done, you've succeeded. I never hear of any other people being compared to Nazis as frequently as the Jews, the principal victims of the Nazis. Thanks for your sensitivity. Shame on you.

May 9th, 2008 11:43pmA bit late in getting into this debate but Ann just has to be educated when she quotes another poster's statement:
"How many examples of Israeli barbarity, murder, illegal annexation and occupation do you need?"
And dear Ann questions innocently:
"Kindly provide evidence for this nonsense".
Well Ann:
1) "Barbarity". The deliberate use of a bunker busting bomb by the Israeli airforce upon a Lebanese civilian area where 56 children were barberously killed.
2) "Murder". The recent murder of a Reuter's reporter in Gaza when shelled by an Israeli tank. He was murdered by sharp, red hot steel flechettes.
3) "Illegal annexation". East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights.
4) "Occupation". The West Bank and the Sheeba farms.
Please think before you speak Ann.

May 12th, 2008 7:21pmGeorge Steiner: When there is no cost to antisemitism it flourishes and is amplified. Think about that.

Stanislav Koblinski
May 13th, 2008 6:21pmBy pure chance I've just come across the source of the reference to postcards of Jews "enjoying themselves in Dachau"
When academics lose their power of reason
‘Let us hope the schoolchildren visitors are properly taught about the elegant swimming pool at Auschwitz, built by the inmates, who would sunbathe there on Saturday and Sunday afternoons while watching the water polo matches,’ he said of the Nazi genocide. ‘Let’s hope they are shown postcards written from Auschwitz, where the postman would collect the mail twice weekly.’
Read it all.
