I was delighted to have the opportunity to talk about the Iranian state channel Press TV on Newsnight last night (see footage below). Nick Ferrari has resigned as a presenter over the channel's coverage of recent events in Iran and I'm certain Andrew Gilligan will do the same. This dreadful channel should be allowed to wither through neglect by serious journalists.
Meanwhile I hear the Iranian journalist Maziar Bahari has been detained, of which more in later posts. The next stage of this terrible crisis seems to be the detention of dissidents and intellectuals.
Fellow journalists should do everything they can to publicise these cases.

That may be the most frustrating interview I have seen in three weeks of Iran coverage. Well done for trying, against overwhelming odds, to get any sensible response from the Press TV spokesman.
By coincidence, we've just posted this afternoon on the latest Press TV English coverage (http://enduringamerica.com/2009/07/02/the-doctor-killed-neda-your-press-tv-guide-to-the-latest-in-iran/).
Best wishes,

July 2nd, 2009 5:05pm Report this commentAhmadinejad's 'PRESSTV' 24/7 propaganda TV channel, based in London, should be closed down forthwith, as a reciprocal action against that Islamic Republic's:
1.)ranking Britain as its public enemy No. 1, and
2.)censorship of BBC.

July 2nd, 2009 5:43pm Report this commentWell done, Martin. You were very solid, very straightforward and very well-researched. All the other bloke did was alternate between trying to trip you up with sophistical tricks and crying: "It's not me, guv. I'm just the PR bloke, yeh?"

But a couple of questions on the subject of Piss TV: what would have happened to Lord Haw-Haw had set up an office in London during the 39-45 spat? And what would have happened to any British subjects who had accepted employment in his broadcasting outfit?
On the other hand - what a risible figure he became, broadcasting his bollocks from enemy territory. At least he received just deserts in the end - no such prospect for today's quislings.
Perhaps there is lesson there: journalism here should be lampooning the fuck out of this odious stream of pus and the traitorous leeches who have taken their shilling from its source (past or present).
Same with the whores who hooked into Al Jaz. The mewling, dribbling Frost, in particular. But then - we have Robert Fisk, too. Not to mention the nauseating Jeremy Bowen (Bowen east five times a day to Mecca, I suspect). The list, of course, is long and infamous: just thank providence for the intertubes and Take the Piss for England.

You did well to keep a straight face (as did Paxman). One aspect I did agree with the Press TV spokesmoron on was the fact that the BBC need to do their research on their guests. Such an incompetent and beligerent (almost threatening I thought) individual shouldn't be put on the airwaves. However it did show Press TV to be the unprofessional Khamenei mouthpiece that it is.

July 5th, 2009 4:42pm Report this commentMartin, my dear old friend, I was asked to go on Newsnight, what a pity I didn't. I would have been able to ask martin about his free trip to israel paid for by an arms dealer. Now that would've been an interesting response. http://fanonite.org/2008/05/21/bigotry-shines-bright-ii/

July 9th, 2009 1:40pm Report this commentPress TV rejects accusations that it is a mouthpiece for the Iranian government.
It is true that we are state-funded (like France 24, Aljazeera, Russia Today and the BBC World Service) but that does not mean we slavishly follow the Iranian government line.
Our international staff is comprised of a huge variety of worldviews and nationalities. And we fully realize that in a modern media environment where viewers have access to a plethora of information, state propaganda is a thing of the past.
Press TV gives a platform to a wide diversity of views - pro-Zionist and anti-Iranian government among them. At the same time we give a voice to the voiceless, the people whom the western media ignores. And that is why our audience is growing.
We are also regulated by Ofcom, which means we must adhere to a strict set of broadcasting regulations regarding balance, due impartiality and objectivity. Rules which the newspaper industry is not subject to.
Regarding the Iranian elections, Press TV has given a platform to all points of view – pro-Ahmadinejad, pro-Mousavi, anti-Iranian government, pro-Iranian government. We have also reported on the post-election rallies and protests.
In short, we simply report the facts and give a platform to a wide variety of opinion. That is what journalists are supposed to do.
