Maziar Bahari and Press TV

Friday, 3rd July 2009

The latest outrage committed by the Iranian state broadcaster Press TV is its coverage of the arrest of film maker and journalist Maziar Bahari.

Maziar, a Canadian-Iranian, was arrested on June 21 and paraded on TV nine days later "confessing" to his role in a western plot to destabilise the Iranian regime. He had provided footage of the crackdown on protestors to Channel 4.

I am loathe to encourage readers to look at the Press TV site, so check out the story at The Spittoon, an excellent website opposed to clerical fascism. The author of the piece, "shikwa", concludes:

"How can anyone continue doubting the bias of Press TV which spews this rubbish at the behest of its clerical-fascist backers? [...]Of course, we all knew long before the rigged elections that Press TV was little more than an organ for the Iranian regime but its slavish regurgitation of Tehran’s nonsense in recent weeks has reached new heights."

Index on Censorship has been following Maziar's case closely and has written about his arrest  and his "confession".

This is a highly sensitive matter. Clearly, there is a risk that a campaign by British journalists for the release of Maziar will simply make things worse for him.

But as the Iranian crackdown follows a familiar authoritarian pattern with the arrest and torture of intellectuals, writers and journalists it is difficlut to remain silent.

Why did anyone in the Occident make apologies for this regime ? We sat about and let them develop nuclear weapons, support terrorism, and meddle in the affairs of their neighbours merely to put two fingers up the US and wallow in a sense of European independence. This is one of the most criminal and dangerous regimes out there and they seem to not care a whit about the 'soft-power' approach. What a bloody mess !

Just saw the reports on PressTV, whats wrong with it? It unearthed that Channel4 selectively edited the video provided to them by Bahari, they censored out the violent attack on the basij armoury with Molotov cocktails BEFORE the basij were left with no choice but to respond, only the basij response was shown on channel 4. If anything its such baised reporting by channel 4 that has resulted in Bahari's arrest! No wonder Bahari is upset and spilling the beans on how the western press is used as a weapon to destabilize governments.

Ron,

You omitted to mention that fiddling of the election results, which has been recognised by all except the Iranian authorities. Perhaps the outrage of many Iranians is because their election has been stolen. It presents the accusations of 'destabilisation' in a rather different light.

Olaf,

Exactly how were the elections fiddled?

The ballots were counted locally in the 47,000 election stations around the country. At least 14 officials from different agencies monitored each election booth, these included executive branch team, local governors rep, Guardian Council team, local police moniitor team, interior ministry inspector, and reps from each candidates team. Before the voting began the ballots boxes were sealed in their presence, then they witnesses the voting and then after the voting the counting was done in their presence. 5 "form 22" are filled in which includes number of ballots for each candidates, number of invalid ballots, and the number of unused ballots left at the polling station. All 14 officials sign the forms. One copy of form 22 is placed in the ballot box which is then resealed, others go to the governors office. After this a form 28 is filled and sent to the interior ministry for tallying. The ballot box and form 22 remain in case of any disputes. All ballot papers come as cheque books with stubs and have serial numbers and province indicator.

With these checks in place how exactly is someone ment to cheat by 11 million votes? Are you saying all these people in 47,000 election stations were bribed and they are still silence after witnessing the resulting riots and the killing of innocent Neda?

'PRESSTV', the Iran regime's London-based, 24/7 TV station, operating on the Sky satellite should be closed down now.

The Islamic Republic regime is happy with dhimmitude, but not with resistance.

Very good 'Sunday Times' piece by Dominic Lawson,on all this today, entitled:

"Iran's stooges are staring right at you"

-with appropriate references to 'PRESSTV', Galloway, Ridley and Gilligan.
(The article is appropriately complimentary, on this occasion, to one M.Bright.)

If only more British journalists had your integrity and courage to stand with their Iranian colleagues. Thank you for standing up to Press TV lies.

I wonder if Dominic Lawson would have been so gushing if he'd read this http://fanonite.org/2008/05/21/bigotry-shines-bright-ii/
But it certainly explains why Martin has no desire to campaign for the journalists arrested onboard the Free Gaza boat last week. they are currently being held in israel and are being pressurised to sign false confessions.
