I can't help thinking that the Observer's Ipsos/Mori poll this weekend was something of a blip. What exactly has the Labour government done to narrow the gap in the last week or so? I hope I'm wrong, because I think the British people deserves a hung parliament, which would be the best result of the next election. I have been saying for some time that the Conservatives do not have the strength in depth to form a credible government and that the electorate faces the most unappealing choice since 1970. Nothing I have seen recently has made me change my mind.
Andrew Rawnsley has written the best of the political column's in the Sundays. He raises the possibility that the Liberal Democrats would demand the resignation of Gordon Brown as the price of an alliance. This is something I have heard from Labour MPs as well as the Lib Dems. There is still considerable resistance to the idea of Tory alliance within the Liberal Democrats, where former members of the SDP in particular find the prospect distasteful.
I was interested to see my Spectator column this week picked up by Labour List. My feeling was Downing Street's desperate hope that the polls would improve in time for the election to deliver a hung parliament was a sign of its growing isolation. But perhaps I was wrong and the Observer poll is the first sign of recovery. However, it was interesting how many Labour supporters called or emailed to stay they thought I was spot on.

Here's your first problem - the poll was not carried out this past week. The
fieldwork dates were much earlier and coincide with those of the last ICM poll, which gave the Tories a comfortable lead.

It's what the Tories haven't done.

November 23rd, 2009 8:17am Report this commentI can't see how a hung parliament can possibly achieve what needs to be done to unravel the disastrous mess that Brown will leave behind.
Therefore your yearning for it shows you to be uninterested in the well being of the people of this country.
So in answer to your headline, yes you are wrong, of course you are you are a socialist.

November 23rd, 2009 9:10am Report this commentI wonder, if there is a hung parliament will the Lib Dems complain about how unfair it is that they are so over-represented in government, as they now complain about how under-represented they are in parliament..... No, I thought not.

November 23rd, 2009 9:30am Report this commentFor what its worth, my Lib dem MP tells me there is no chance that the LDs will prop up a rejected Liebour Govt. He sees the chance of an alliance between a 'Green' dripping wet Daveist Tory administration and his party. I told him I thought this would be a disaster.
You are right: its the most unappealing choice since Stanley Baldwin was up against Ramsay Macdonald. Dave is Bliar without the rictus grin. And Bruin is John Major without the stunning competence and sex appeal.

November 23rd, 2009 6:09pm Report this commentIn the event of a hung parliament, the Libs will form a govt with whoever will promise them proportional representation. Brown has sort of hinted (the tease) that he might consider it.
For Brown this would be 1 last chance to permanently damage a crucial part of the country’s fabric without having sought the electorate’s views and as such the temptation to do it will be irresistible. The resulting coalition will not last long, but Brown will be able to say that he won an election, and there’s no price he wouldn’t have us pay for that.

November 23rd, 2009 7:28pm Report this commentMake no mistake about it: There will be no PR electoral system. So the LDP and the BNP can stop having wet dreams about this. No responsible party in its (collective) right mind will agree to this in the current state of British politics. Do you want an Italian or Israeli situation here?
I would look to a National Coalition to deal with the major security problems facing this country. We are at war and therefore we need a War government to take tough decisions. And I would want the brilliant Blair to return to High Office.
