Melanie, thank you again for this article. The reason Sen. McCain isn't using the enormous pile of facts that would adversely impact Sen. Obama is because of the pending passage of the bailout bill. Once the bill is passed (expected today), the gloves will come off. Until then, Sen. McCain needs to fly the bipartisan flag.

The Truth Hurts

October 3rd, 2008 5:44pm

So while the US financial system is teetering on the brink of collapse, urgently waiting for Conressional approval of a bailout plan, Congress decides to take a day's holiday to celebrate...........wait for it.........The Jewish New Year!!!
How come the US's 3% Jewish population have manged to convince the other 97% to celebrate their New Year?

Harvey

October 3rd, 2008 6:49pm

The Truth Hurts

For that matter why do we the 3% have to put up with celebrating your new year ?

But who cares we get Chanucah as well as Christmas

phil

October 4th, 2008 9:22am

Harvey ,its better to smile and realise ones superiority rather than respond to a low life that could post such a message on a thread which is for the purpose of wishing each other happy new year -I wish you that too and people of all religions -just relish the idea of him crawling back under his stone as the unhappy person he must be .

Marcus from the USA

October 4th, 2008 5:57pm

Actually the Jewish population in the US is between 5.1 - 5.3 million, which is less than 2% of the total population.

The Jewish population is also declining.

Interestingly enough, Mel and her pals are resisting the Islamization of the West, yet allowing the Judeofication of America.

phil

October 4th, 2008 8:31pm

Marcus from the USA-back from a trip on the broomstick -perhaps now you can crawl under the stone with "the truth hurts" and that will bring our percentage a tiny bit higher -your last remark will not gain you a degeree in higher maths either-but you are an amusing fellow ,soI will even wish you a happy new year which maybe you will remember is the purpose of this particular thread . you dont need to fast we will do that for you -ok?

The Truth Hurts

October 4th, 2008 10:57pm

Still no answer to my question?
I wonder why.

Adam B.

October 4th, 2008 11:16pm

Yes, Marcus, how terrible - perhaps Christianity is also a Jewish plot to take over the world. You are a sick, sick antisemitic man, you poor sod. And "truth hurts" (try to live up to your name), "THEIR" holiday? "They" are Americans too, you know.

October 4th, 2008 10:57pm

Still no answer to my question?
I wonder why.

Maybe because your question is venimously slanted, you dork.

The rest of Congress and the Senate are not "celebrating" the Jewish New Year. They use it as an excuse to take a day or 2 off.

And why do they do that? Because they want to and apparently they can. Such conduct unheard of from politicians!

And if they didn't, a handful of congressmen and Senators would not be able to attend. So? Big deal.

Get a life. Ah! The truth hurts, doesn't it?!

For the rest of you, for reference: Congress quiet on Jewish New Year.

The Truth Hurts -I will tell you your answer in the hope that you will then go back under your stone and stop desecrating this thread .
Its because the USA takes the best parts from its many and varied cultures and enjoys the love and affection that radiates from each one -except of course when people like you prefer to hate -now hoppit son we don't need your views on a thread like this -happy new year .I would like to say and may your fast be long but I wont .Welcome back Adam B -you have been missed .

Happy New Year Phil, and to all Jewish readers of good intent.

I would like to extend that wish to all readers of bad intent as well, Jewish and non-Jewish. For to have a Shanna Tova - a good year - means to wind up being a doer of good deed based on good intentions.

These wishes are part of what we Jews pray for in all of the Amidah prayers on both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Open you Artscroll or other English Machzor and read carefully. ;)

Marcus from the USA

October 6th, 2008 5:44pm

Harvey, you have to put up with it because America is about 80% Christian, and that warrants that the Gregorian New Year (Jan. 1st) to be a national holiday in the United States.

Also the three pillars of Western Civilization are Greek philosophy, Roman Law, and the Christian Religion.

Despite the fact that Jews have a long history in the Western World, Judaism is not, and has not been a major factor in shaping our civilization.

That is why Christian holidays are to be official national holidays, and Jewish ones are not.

Adam B.

October 6th, 2008 11:24pm

Marcus, Christianity has its roots in Judaism, owes its entire ethical code (and consequently the westen world's) to Judaism. You may have noticed Jesus, and all his disciples, were Jews. Get a lesson in theology. Your rant is motivated by hate, and if you were honest, you'd admit it. Get a life.

Adam B.

October 6th, 2008 11:26pm

Marcus, since when has Christianity officially been the state religion of the US? And how on earth is Western culture based on the Romans?

James

October 7th, 2008 11:31am

Does the Knesset stop for Christmas? Well, why should they, they're a Jewish state and Christianity is only a minority religion. No double standards on this blog.

phil

October 7th, 2008 12:30pm

James what business is it of either you or I ?-the Americans democratically do what they see fit to do -

Simon

October 7th, 2008 12:53pm

James: well said, but they won't understand. Prepare merely for a hail of abuse, permitted as always by the moderator who - to give him his due I suppose - will be taking orders from the battle axe.

Adam B.'s post just before this one already gave the answer.

No double standards but posts like James' contain no standards whatsoever.

simon missed simple as a prefix can you not see the purpose of this thread ?it is wishing you well -how sick do you have to be to reject that .

'Honorary' Phil, Adam B.? Really? I mean, come on.

Marcus from the USA: Your last comment has been taken down. It shouldn't have slipped through the net in the first place.

phil & AdamB: I haven't posted comments by you both referring to Marcus from the USA's comment - for obvious reasons. Apologies.
