Given the shambles that is the Clegg and Huhne panto, how long before the Lib Dem grassroots launch a ‘Draft Vince’ campaign? His performance so far more than justifies it.If the LibDems have any residual connection to reality (I know, I know) they must surely see what is now at the end of their noses. Draft Vince now!

November 28th, 2007 11:50pmYou are right, Melanie; I almost logged on to the LibDem web site and enrolled after Vince's crack today. Then the images of Jeremy Thorpe, Mark Oaten and Simon Hughes welled up in my mind ... and I thought, "Nah!" One swallow does not make a summer's day - even though it may have made theirs. 'From Stalin to Mr Bean' - wonderful! He must get Speccy politician of the year for that. Mind you - considering that one of the LibDem leadership contenders, viz. Chris Huhne, is a ringer for Rowan Atkinson, Vince is pushing his luck. On the other hand .... hmmmnnn!

November 29th, 2007 12:48pmTime for a re-alignment in ploitics. The honest left with Vince Cable as leader and the rest with, with ... Well as a disparate group of feuding ideologues. This would give rise to an election and a Cameron/Davis government with a real opposition. You're right! Too much Dr. Who, I'm in a paralell world.

November 30th, 2007 11:58amfield "This is the modern age. He has hair growing out of his ears. He cannot lead his party." Really? I get the impression the current Prime Minsiter has to shave the backs of his hands - does that disqualify him also?
