Excellent column today in the Times by David Aaronovitch on the extraordinary loss of rationality by the great and the good, in which he makes precisely the point I made here last month that the claim that Britain already detains terror suspects without charge for longer than any other European country is complete nonsense, as we can all see with every day that passes in the Meredith Kercher investigation in Italy.

December 18th, 2007 11:05amMeredith Kercher was killed in ITALY Mel. But Spain too has extremely long periods of detention, for example ETA suspects.

December 18th, 2007 12:00pmHoward, why don't you ask Beckham if he would like to play a game of professional Rugby, or Ronnie O' to suit up for a game of American gridiron. Come to think of it, is there any chance that you will stop your whingeing. Ms. Phillips writes cogently about Education, the madness of Europe, the weaknesses of Government and other apropos subjects. But the overwhelming truth of our day is that The Middle East, Terrorism, and the Global Climate Change Scam are the major part of the News, which you, in your reveries, never see, or hear or talk about! Ms. Phillips is quarterbacking the side in the UK. She is not about to become a wide receiver just because you want her to.

December 18th, 2007 12:28pmHoward, You would prefer the appalling scandle of the possibly rigged 'X'Factor vote, or the hiring of a new manager for the England team. Of course there are many matters of hugely greater importance than the potential annihilation of Western culture through either through it's own cultural ennui or conquest, or the potential annihilation of mankind (or not as the case may be). Happy Christmas everyone :o)

December 18th, 2007 12:31pmHoward - this is a blog and Melanie gets to blog about what she likes. If you don't like it go find another blog.

Would you rather she wrote about things she knows nothing or cares nothing about? Like most other journalists...

December 18th, 2007 2:08pmHoward, Mel also supports the Creationist agenda (Daily Mail passim), so it's not all Islamic hysteria and climate change denial. And concerning the topic of this blog (incarceration without trial), how about those poor unfortunates held in Camp Delta? Or does Mel not deem to comment on that?

December 18th, 2007 3:09pmMel knows nothing about climatology either, but that doesn't stop her banging on about it.

December 18th, 2007 3:44pmHoward, I'm sure that Melanie will find your heartfelt desire that she entertains and enlightens you on some other subjects to be a great boost to her kudos since you obviously ache to read Melanie's words on a host of issues. However, Melanie knows that few other journalists have the insight to tackle some of the subjects she favours and I, for one, am mesmerised by her output and rapier-like honing on the detail and angle others miss. I can tell you are a fan just like me!

December 18th, 2007 8:11pmI am glad I have caused a reaction to my comment. It is just so boring going on about the same subjects all the time. If a newspaper devoted itself to three subjects, it would have a readership to match!
