BBC casualty figures (in Israeli Gaza operation not over )correspond with Hamas and an Israeli human rights group:
It said of the 106 Palestinians it recorded as dying violently between Wednesday and Monday, at least 54 were not involved in hostilities and 25 of them were minors.

Unfortunately in a 576 word article they mentioned twice that Israel had killed over 100 Palestinians without saying how many were civilian...it is only in the last 54 words, a point to which most people probably don't read, does it mention that the civilians were not the only deaths...but it doesn't mention who those others might be.

It's interesting that Hamas seems bent on destroying Ashkelon, the town supplying the bulk of its electricity. If they succeeded, the "humanitarian crisis" would deepen and elicit even more sympathy for them.

Should the situation anticipated here come to pass (which I doubt since firm action will occur before then), then I wonder where the Hamas leadership will be controlling their side of the conflict from. I doubt that it will be from Gaza. Their camera fodder constituents will, of course, be nobly and honourably martyred up a gum tree with no-where to go except glorious Paradise (for men; who knows where the women end up?). But the Hamas mafia itself? Miles away. Manipulating it all bravely bravely from a secret hideout where they'll cower in gleeful safety whilst others shed blood for their remote triumphalist glory and Iranian plaudits. The Hamas ruling elite are the most gruesome menagerie of thugs I've seen. They incite the self destruction of their own voters: singly as suicide bombers; and collectively as civilian casualties and as economic victims of a failed, mendicant regime. They lie repeatedly to the world (whose journalists seem willing to swallow stories and versions of stories as told by Hamas crooks they wouldn't otherwise buy a second hand kitchen gas-stove from). They rule with a totalitarian and wholly intolerant rod of brutal islamism that breaches or contradicts all those finest western values that the often fooled western media (the Balenreportaphobic BBC) thinks its duty to uphold and defend. Democracy? A mere mechanism for gaining power and for justifying yet more aid? Free speech? What's that? Impartial justice? You must be joking: this is sharia here. Human rights? Excuse my mirth. Gay pride? Gay's are haram - we deal with them. Legitimate political opposition? Yes, if you don't mind the fatal drop from a high balcony. And so on. And we listen to these odious creeps. I don't wish conflict on anyone in that troubled region. I don't like war; suffering; bloodshed; torture; broken lives........... But Hamas is inviting all of this by its utter refusal to negotiate and to abandon its long term intention to destroy utterly the Jewish State. So be it. But if there's now peaceful way out of this, let's hope they're eliminated before they can take flight leaving everyone else behind.

Many at the BBC and other 'News' services are not strictly journalists any longer, they merely pass on information fed to them by Reuteurs or from 'reliable sources' as Orla Guerin called the helpful Palestinians at Jenin who told her about 3000 massacred Palestinians under the rubble (I believe she did say she hadn't confirmed it herself...but claimed her source was good...like Blair's Dossier no doubt).

Paxman in his famous speech, stated that money, time and resources meant that investigative journalism was no longer possible (even if the BBC was interested in truth),.

"In this press of events there often isn’t time to get out and find things out: you rely upon second-hand information-quotes from powerful vested interests, assessments from organisations which do the work we don’t have time for, even, god help us, press releases from public relations agencies. The consequence is that what follows isn’t analysis. It’s simply comment, because analysis takes time, and comment is free."

He thought that the people involved in rigging phone contests or the naming of TV cats should be prosecuted...no mention of journalists who incite terrorism, encourage Muslim radicalism or spread anti-Semitism.

It seems to me that the doomsday scenario - alluded in this report, is already here. Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria and Iran are fully engaged in the war against Israel - and the Hamas proxy - is attempting to inflict exactly the kind of damage Oren is talking about. Nothing stops them from moving to the next level - at the time and place of their choosing. Israel enemies don't need a disaster to escalate their attacks - they will manufacture one, they have already manufactured one. I am surprised that Oren and Israeli planners are worried about hypothetical doomsday when they have a real "doomsday" Israel has lost any deterrent it might have had, and is just reacting (feebly) to Hamas initiatives. Israel - should come with a more original response to the rocket attacks. Restoring the blockade on the Egyptian border and pushing the border further south to gain a defensive depth may be options. Israel must figure out how to stop these rocket attacks at all costs.

Some such scenario is indeed already likely. Before long though the Hamas militants and other even more extreme Jihadists may be able to bring Israeli cities to their knees with relatively modest weaponry, but maybe coupled with chemical or biological material. I'd be surprised if they haven;t already tried to deliver some sort of payload. The danger of escalation is now that we could - within a few years - quickly end up with a major nuclear exchange, with Israel - virtually wiped out - revenging itself on the Arab states, incinerating Mecca perhaps and on Iran with a major strike against a population centre. The environmental consequence would make Chernobyl look like an indoor firework. There are a number of conclusions I draw: 1. Now is not the time for Israel to try to keep its negotiating position secret. It needs to spell out in clear detail how far it can go. If it is not prepared to put Jerusalem in the basket then I am afraid they will only have themselves to blame for the negative consequences. 2. The democracies should provide full principled backing for Israel, stop funding Hamas and stop equating Israel, a civilised democracy, with Hamas, a terrorist outfit prepared to indoctrinate children in the ways of murder. 3. Dislodging Hamas from control of Gaza is now extremely important.

Palestinians shoot dozens of Kasaam rockets into Israel every day for months and months. Finally, the Israelis get tired of this and open up some counter battery artillery on the rocket shooters, killing some of them. Since shooting off rockets into Israel is apparently some kind of Palestinian block party event, several “innocent” bystanders get killed. (How do you tell who the civilians are over there, when nobody wears a uniform and the whole bunch of them voted for a terrorist government which they all strongly believe in?)

Finding out that war is tough when the other guy actually bothers to shoot back, the Palestinians scream “genocide."

Palestinians take a detour on the “roadmap to peace” by suspending talks with Israel. They can talk all day when it’s just them keeping the fight going, but they get their noses in a twist when they get shot at. Go figure.

UN members wear out their Nikes running to Turtle Bay to crank out yet another angry Post-It note condemning Isreal for “unequal force” retaliation.

Meanwhile Jeremy Bowen, in his usual biased fashion, talks of an "asymmetric war"! Is there nothing that can be done about the anti-Israel propaganda that appears on the BBC website virtually day in, day out? And what perhaps too many of Israel's supporters overlook in this media onslaught that is proving so ominous for Israel and western civilisation is children's TV and internet sites aimed at children, not least the Beeb's own. I don't get a chance very often to look at children's news programmes on the Beeb, but whenever I have, I have been struck, more often than not, at the pro-Palestinian tone and content. Occasionally the bias is flagrant. Monitoring what the BBC puts out for consumption by young minds (both on the TV set and on the web) should be a serious priority for all who support Israel and western civilisation.
