This is what Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami said at last Friday’s prayer meeting in Tehran about the Geneva talks between Iran and the UN Security council big five plus Germany:
‘The meeting was a great victory for the Islamic Republic of Iran to such an extent that even the Western and Zionist media had to admit defeat....Prior to the talks, they (Westerners) used to speak of suspension and sanctions against Iran, but after the talks, there has not been any word of suspension or sanctions, rather, Iran's package of proposals was the axis.’
Ayatollah Khatami is correct. As a result of this grovelling, America and the west are now so weakened that the Ayatollah also felt emboldened to threaten Israel once again with extinction, this time with a ‘third intifada’ over the spurious claim that Israel has attacked the al Aqsa mosque (an incitement which so far has failed to ignite the Palestinians) -- even as Iran moves serenely onwards towards finally checkmating America with its nuclear weapon.
This is the outcome of Obama’s hand of friendship. This is why Obama received the Nobel Appeasement Prize.

October 14th, 2009 10:43amHal Lindsey said on his show, that history does not repeat itself , but it certainly rhymes ! Yes, the current situation is not an exact copy of the situation in 1938 with Hitlers Germany and checkoslovakia. But there are certainly enough parallels to make it worrying all the same !

October 14th, 2009 11:44amMelanie,
You should have added that Obama completely failed to deal with Iran in his first two terms from 2000 to 2008. Instead, he invaded Iraq and got rid of Iran's main enemy in the region while reducing the flexibility of the American military to deal with Iran. Iran's nuclear program is now that much further down the road thanks to the sideshow of Iraq.

October 14th, 2009 12:35pmFirst, some housekeeping: The philosopher George Santayana originally said: "If we do not learn from the mistakes of history, we are doomed to repeat them." But enough quibbling, nosmo29 and Raymond J, your points are well taken.
We are repeating the sins of the past, and we are doomed unless we eradicate Iran's ability to deliver nuclear weapons. As Melanie pointed out: "Ayatollah Khatami is correct. As a result of this grovelling, America and the west are now so weakened that the Ayatollah also felt emboldened to threaten Israel once again with extinction..."
The operative word there is "grovelling." Kind of like Chamberlain in 1938. Not exactly the same history but pretty darn close regarding the consequences.

October 14th, 2009 2:33pmSimon P, well done for castigating SHIM and his outrageous enjoinder to '[k]ill the Iranians before they kill us. They are barbarians, filthy backward racist scum who have offered the world nothing. We gave the world civilisation. BOmb Iran now'.
Unfortunatley, SHIM is merely calling for that which Phillips and the melunits repeatedly call out for - she/he has simply shorn the request of its sophistry.

October 14th, 2009 2:46pmThe point about history repeating itself, oft-quoted and misunderstood - it is not a question of repeating the mistakes of 1938 - rather, it is to avoid making mistakes now in 2009, which are plain to see. Hat tip: Herbert Butterfield.

October 14th, 2009 5:01pmSi, N:
For all we know SHIM is your agent provocateur pseudonym. Anti-Israel leftists have taken to leaving nasty racist poops on sites they dislike, in order to create a record of rightist violent racism to justify their own destructive impulses.
It is clear from your frequent posts (on other threads here) exhibiting anti-Israel sophistry that you would support Iran's nuclear and map-wiping ambitions. Shorn of that sophistry your clear message is that Israel deserves to die. Why not simplify your posts to: "Go Arabs! Go Iran! Go Jihad!"
I would be happy to respond with "Go away." Or something less sophistical.

October 14th, 2009 5:12pmThe West can either just watch Iran move towards a weapon of mass destruction, or it can force nuclear development underground permanently by bombing and neutering any sites
capable of being bombed. The renewed contempt for America is the usual sabre-rattling lingo of the agressor and the schoolyard bully. General public opinion might believe that Iran prefers to support rebel outfits and terrorism to a stand-up fight. But one day, when rogue scientists and engineers have done their bit, the launch-pad is ready, and the warhead is in place, what then? Best strike while the iron's hot.... but not too hot!
Tom Durkin
October 14th, 2009 5:33pmhas melanie considered the possibility that Iran is a weak state? and the weaker it is the more dangerous? This proposition does not hold in reverse.
whilst we do not want a strong Iran, it is illogical and counter-productive to push it into a corner. Positive outcomes result from dialogue not war mongering and/or naked power plays.
That is when irrational acts will play out with disastrous consequences.
Apologies for the harsh tone but i think your analysis shows why you are journalist not a statesmen.
C. Gee
October 14th, 2009 7:22pmTom Durkin:
Who is war-mongering and making naked power plays? Why do you not suggest to Iran that America is a strong state, and therefore not dangerous? Or perhaps Iran has already determined that America is a weak state - so it ought to be afraid? What a muddle.
What has driven Iran into a corner, if it is in one?
Please review the last century or so for evidence of "dialogue" producing producing positive outcomes in the Middle East?
You tone of your posts can be as harsh as you wish. The content needs to be harder to justify it. No point in a ferociously expressed "Be nice."
Brian Moshe
October 14th, 2009 7:26pmThe comments by SHIM are so obnoxious that I am sure no regular commenter (regardless of their position on the Middle East) here on Melanie's blog will feel anything but revulsion on reading them.
It has obviously escaped SHIM's notice that only recently Melanie was eloquently wielding her pen in support of the Iranian people after the theft of their election and the stifling of their dissent and she has also exposed, the also recent, sell-out and betrayal of Iranian dissidents in Iraq.
I condemn every word in your hideous rant and I feel that the vast majority of the regulars here are going to feel something similar.
You are clearly unaware of the tremendous cultural achievements that Persia has given the world in its long history.
I am not asking for your gutter raving to be removed. Let it remain so that the name of SHIM can publicly wallow in its own filth.

October 14th, 2009 10:12pmIran should not arouse concern. Georgia is the most dangerous flashpoint in Russia's tense relations with the West. The Bible says: "At the appointed time [the king of the north = Russia] will return back [will regain the influence, which it lost after the break-up of the Soviet Union] and come into the south [many indicate that this might be Georgia], but it will not be as the former [1921] or as the latter [2008]. For the dwellers of coastlands of Kittim [the West] will come against him, and he will be humbled, and will return." (Daniel 11:29,30a) Then Iran will be humbled also. "But ships will come from the direction of Kittim, troubling Asshur [Russia] and troubling Eber [inhabiting on the other side the Euphrates]." (Numbers 24:24a, BBE)
At that time, peace will be taken from the earth and the "great sword" - nuclear sword - will be used. (Revelation 6:4) However, it will be neither the great tribulation nor "the end of the world" (Armageddon). As Jesus foretold, that will be "the beginning of birth pains". (Mathew 24:7,8)
If the Heavens planned a full return of Russia (and much suggests this) the present economic crisis will deepen. Then also the European Union and NATO will not stands.
In the same way the earlier prophecy had fulfilled: "And (he) [the king of the north = Russia] will go back (to) his land with great wealth [1945]; and his heart (will be) against the holy covenant [state atheism]; and will act effectively; and turned back to his own land [the break-up of the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact, the return of Russian troops to country]." (Daniel 11:28)

October 15th, 2009 8:41amC. Gee moans about ‘nasty racist poops’ – tough shit!
SHIMlike droppings are the natural by-product of the unkind manure Phillips spreads about.
Augustus is SHIM with a soupcon of sophistry, salivating at the prospect of bombing the land of ‘the aggressor…the schoolyard bully…support[er of] rebel outfits and terrorism…rogue scientists and engineers…’ (wipe & flush)
Just ‘the usual sabre-rattling lingo’.
See how few melunits challenge him.

October 15th, 2009 10:03amBrian Moshe: what, in your view, would be the effect on the Persian/Iranian people - casualties etc - of a bombing campaign which targets the Iranian nuclear facilities only?
There is alot of emotive language used to talk about "attacking Iran", but perhpas we should get a little more "surgical" in the analysis. Let's stick to the predicted casualty figures - numbers and to what degree the people employed in bomb development, only, would be the victims of such an attack. Then, this can inform the discussion re whether or not a nuclear weaponisation program should be accepted by the international community.

October 15th, 2009 11:35pmSHIM (Seig Heil I--- M----?) sounds like an impostor to me. Iranians - although they themselves have a big Aryan myth thing going (that's why they changed their name from Persia to Iran)tend not to excite much racial animosity I would say - apart from the Arabs (many of whom hate them heartily).
The sensible policy here is to expose what the Iranian regime is all about, what their ideology is (e.g. what Khomeini preached in his vile pronouncements) and declare they won't be getting their bomb. That will involve blockade, financial/trade war and strategic bombing of nuclear-related sites and roads, electrical lines etc serving such facilities.

October 16th, 2009 11:50amC'mon folks, some of you have fallen for it hook, line and sinker. SHIM = Troll
Wikipedia definition: "In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion."

October 18th, 2009 4:26pmPersia is an ancient and great nation. It is NOT surprising that
under it's new name "Iran" it aspires to greater influence, in its region as well as in the world.
In fact, this development was the US (Kissinger) Plan in the early/mid 1970's. The 1979 Khomenist Revolution ran that plan off the rails and we are living with the consequences.
More than anything else, what would help the West would be internal regime change. When I go to sleep at night I do not fear an India with atomic weapons, I am queasy about Pakistan due to the instability
of that nation, "Iran" is sui generis due to the regime. Changing the regime changes the game. That is where efforts should be directed primarily, with large scale military engagement as a last resort.

October 21st, 2009 12:32pmFrom the BBC - Breaking News:
UN puts Iran deal on the table:
"Iran and three world powers have been handed a draft proposal by UN nuclear monitors on Iran's uranium enrichment.
Tehran will have until Friday to give its approval of the deal put forward by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director Mohamed ElBaradei.
It comes on the final day of tense negotiations involving Iran, France, Russia and the United States at IAEA headquarters in Vienna.
Talks stalled on Tuesday when Iran refused to curb its enrichment work."
Buying of more time? Probably not even worth the paper it's written on!
