Dubai: the mystery deepens

Thursday, 25th February 2010

Like many of us, Ha’aretz finds the mystery of just who assassinated the Hamas terrorist Mahmoud Mabhouh in Dubai ever more bizarre:

Twenty-six agents, perhaps even 30, sent to assassinate one person? Granted if they could flee the scene by sea, how could one think that Mossad agents would take cover in Iran? I ask myself. Even if they have unprecedented self confidence the likes of which are unknown?

...The police chief, who attracted international coverage, apparently isn't itching to advance the investigation. Last week he was out of the office for personal reasons and now it has been announced that he is on a pilgrimage to Mecca.

It is hard to believe that, if the Mossad intelligence agency carried out the operation, the planners were so irresponsible as to dispatch nearly 30 agents and to expose an entire select operational unit on one assassination operation. This is true even if we assume the planner thought the target should be hit no matter what, and even if hypothetically Mabhouh was on his way to Iran to arrange an arms deal that Israel had seen as changing the balance of power.

Either the new revelations are another salvo in Dubai's psychological warfare or the police investigators are groping in the dark. It is doubtful we will ever know the truth.

But that hasn’t stopped the western media from leaping to conclusions.

Update: Now the Dubai police appear to be accusing Hamas itself of being behind the assassination:

Dubai’s chief of police, Lt. Gen. Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, on Sunday called on Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Zahar to launch an 'internal investigation' into the operation.

Tamim claims that an associate of al-Mabhouh, a high-ranking military leader, leaked information about the Hamas leader’s visit to Dubai and went as far as to refer to the associate as 'the real murderer.'

Further update: Tom Gross protests  further here about the nonsense being written about all this in the media, which have been making wild claims about the assumed Israel connection that are patently untrue.

With modern methods of police invesitigation together with the high levels of international co-operation that currently exist between law-enforcement agencies, it will only be a matter of time before of all those persons 'fingered' by the Dubai police are fully identified. Mobile phone records, financial transactions, previous intelligence records will all play their part but it is likely to take many months of carefully research by dedicated investigators. I am confident that the perpetrators will be fully identified and I shall be be pleasantly surprised if it is shown that Mossad orchestrated this incident. But will will know the truth eventually.

I suppose the Australian government must now be tarred as an evil cabal of Jew-haters because they have the audacity to seek clarification as to why one 'intelligence' agency appears to find it necessary to steal the identities of so many people, including those of Australian citizens.

Of course it doesn't matter that said 'intelligence' agency is alleged to have done such a thing. Even if they did it, which they refuse to confirm or deny, 'intelligence' agencies must be allowed to do whatever they like in the prevailing circumstances.

There is no mystery here, only deliberate confusion.

Oh this is getting juicy. So lets assume here that Israel isnt actually involved in the hit...I just wonder if all those left wing public servants who have vilified Israel (not to mention the haters in al beeb et al) will offer public apologies for making uninformed statements about Israels involvement in the hit?

No of course we cant expect that!

This 'police chief took an example from Sadam's 'Minister of Information (remember him?). Talks a lot, but doesn't PROOF a thing. In the meantime ALL those 'rightious governements take the word of this clown, together with the famous
'journalist hysteria as 'proof that the Israeli's (of course) did it. Warnings come from the left and the right with all the hypocrites outdoing themselves in warning Israel, again WITHOUT a shred of evidence. Bottom line...the terrorist (who entered Dubai on a FAKE passport) is dead and someone in HOLLYWOOD is going to make a lot of money.

Strikes me they are simply clueless as to how to conduct an investigation and are just naming every kuffar foreigner they can think of who was present at the time.

Like most people I find this very confusing and I cannot understand how the Israelis managed to get the passports and identities of those people who had never set foot in Israel,if in fact they did !! perhaps it is some other agency infiltrating and working in Dubai with the intent to discredit Israel .It does seem very unlike the Mossad to give away the identities of its own personnel. So many of the named people are obviously not Mossad agents .neither Israeli nor Jewish ,just innocents caught in a trap .Methinks there is mischief afoot here and batman at the foreign office could end up looking very foolish -not again you say?

Let's not forget that this investigation is being conducted by a regime that don't support or allow human rights. Why, then is Interpol assisting them? Anyone detained within EU would not be sent to Dubai because of the HRA.

Why is a government linked by its secret service to torture, making all this noise - Milliband shut up!

For years Australian governments, like many others, have been giving taxpayers' money to the "Palestinian " 'Authority."
These donations find their way to Hamas, to "Palestinian" officials' pockets and to Fatah / PLO weapons purchases.

The public anger in Australia over the global warming fraud threatens to topple the Assie government.

It's not the first time Kevin Rudd's administration has rushed to judgement so no one can be surprised it is not the last.

The late journalist Sefton Delmer wrote two books about his activities in WWII titled "Black Boomerang" and "Trail Sinister" (published in the late 60s). They described the use of so-called "black propaganda", that is doing something nasty yourself and then blaming it on your opponents. Now why have I remembered these books when I haven't read them for at least forty years?

"Now the Dubai police appear to be accusing Hamas itself of being behind the assassination."

You're a bit behind the times aren't you? There was talk of a Hamas informant really quite early on in the investigation.

And as for "the assumed Israel connection that are patently untrue" - if they are "patently untrue", where is your evidence to support your argument?

Amusing to note that many reports states as fact that Mossad were responsible for the assassination, and then refer to the 'alleged' arms deal that Mabhouh was seeking to secure.

Does the end ever justify the means? Is there such a thing as morality in war? Is it always wrong to try to assassinate those who are evil? Do we lose our souls when we assassinate others? These are not easy questions to think about let alone answer. In a war, when there are people who want you dead, these questions become moot. In order to survive, you have to kill as many of the enemy as possible. It is only afterward when there is the luxury of looking at what was done from an armchair, that these questions become significant from a philosophical and moral standpoint.

Alan Dershowitz, American constitutional lawyer and Harvard legal scholar, weighed in on this issue. He claims in a post on the Huffington Post that he doesn’t think that Israel, if they were responsible for the hit, did anything illegal. According to him, not all extrajudicial killings are illegal. As far as Israel is concerned, al-Mabhouh was an unlawful combatant because he was “actively participating in an ongoing war by Hamas against Israeli civilians.” It would, said Dershowitz, certainly have been legal to kill al-Mabhouh in Gaza. However, killing him in Dubai violated the law of Dubai. Yada, yada, yada.

Let all those legal types argue about whether the attack was legal in a particular zip code of Dubai as opposed to a ghetto in Gaza. And in answer to all of these questions of moral correctness, ethical consideration, and philosophical concern, some of which I posed, I say “bulls__t.” Israel and Hamas are at war. And war is complicated, disgustingly brutal, and morally difficult if not impossible. My take is that if these assassins were Israeli, they should have honorary statues dedicated to them in every major city on Earth and in most of the towns in Israel. There should be rejoicing in the streets. These assassins made the world safer by eliminating that Hamas monster who murdered innocent civilians including children. Safeguarding the innocent and protecting civilization, that’s what counts morally, ethically, and philosophically when there is a war.

For those who would in a knee-jerk way, blame Israel for the Dubai assault without evidence and castigate her about the morality of it, I have the following questions for them: Would you shed a tear for Hitler, Stalin, or Mao Tse Tung if they were assassinated? Wouldn’t you be glad if any of those tyrants were killed before they continued to murder additional millions? How these quick-to-judge individuals answered those two questions would indicate whether they were hypocritical or not when it came to the demise of Hamas’s top military commander. Their answers would also give a clue about their decency. So, if it was Israel, I say mazel tov. You did the world a huge favor, and you should be commended rather than condemned. If it was Hamas who did the deed, well, terrorists destroying their own for whatever reason is surprising and enthusiastically to be encouraged.

Oh, and Ed

From the article in the National Post than Melanie linked to: "Even The New York Times and International Herald Tribune got in on the act on Friday, telling readers that Israel has engaged in 40 Dubai-type assassinations in recent years – again claims made without a shred of evidence, and highly unlikely to be true."

While it seems likely that somebody in Hamas leaked information allowing them to target it, & who knows at what level & with what authority that information was passed, I simply cannot believe this was carried out by someone other than the Israelis. It took considerable organisation, it worked, it was done without blowing anything up, they all got away & no bystanders were killed. Who else could do that?

DeeJay you may be right about modern policing being able to track them down but 2 years of "investigation" into the NATO police dissections of living people & flying out of body organs from Tirana airport to western hospitals has failed to detect the perpetrators. It may depend how diligent the investigation is which is something we will see. Personally I know which I think more serious but then don't have the right realpolitik attitude.

Whomever did it (and I tend to think that it was a collaborative affair amongst several intelligence agencies), I want to thank them for ridding the world of a truly evil individual. The continuing obsession that the Times of London has with this case is an interesting case study in special pleading.

Sweet justice would have the Israelis behind this.

However, if it is discovered that Hamas or some other Muslim outfit assassinated the rat and set it up with pointers to Israel, I suspect this will rapidly turn into a non-event by the dishonest, hate-filled lamestream media.

Wipe your feet on the way out.

I think it is the Judean People's Liberation Front that done it. Or is it the People's Liberation Front of Judaea? This op could be the work of Monty Python. One of the perps did look like John Cleese. Where was John Cleese last month? We want to know.

If Mossad did this operation, then seriously, they need to go back to school - elementary school.
