Apologies for the absence of posts but I'm afraid the combination of extra work and the imminent Jewish New Year has got the better of me. I'll be back on Sunday. Shana tova.

Actually kind of disappointed to hear you're Jewish. Was hoping there was a non-Jew who so vocally and rationally presented the pro-Israeli (or at least not anti-Israeli) narrative. Wouldn't that be something? Shana Tova!

Nathan I am an English catholic who years ago spent an idyllic 12 months living and working in Israel. It is a wonderful country and its struggle should be our struggle. I fully endorse pretty much every thing Melanie says. Shan tova - ani ohev Israel...

Nathan, I admit I am no Melanie but am Scots, not jewish and have been to Israel, staying with Jewish friends. I have witnessed Israel as did Andre.....Wonderful country and people. I am not blinded by my friendship but I refuse to accept that Israel et al is the cause of the problems in the ME. Frankly, Israel may just be our Saviour. Shana Tova to all

Leshana tova tikosevu, Melanie, to you and all those you love. Like Andre, I'm a Catholic who spent (a too short) time in Israel and value it as a life changing experience. May there be peace in Jerusalem and on the Land.

mairT and Andre, as an Israeli now living in the US, it does my heart good to know that the leanings of the British press and the more vocal British activists do not represent as unchallenged a viewpoint as I'd feared. While I'm sure you're in the minority, I appreciate your sentiments. Whenever your new year begins, may it be a good one.

Happy New Year, Melanie, and all your Jewish readers. I am not Jewish either, but admire and respect the Jewish people and Israel.

If I may be personal, I came from a pretty loveless home, but had a Jewish friend whose lovely family embraced me and included me in the warmth and affection (and wonderful arguments!) of their family life. Through this personal connection, I learned more of Jews and Judaism, and from that knowledge grew to admire the richness of the contribution that Jewish people have made to human advancement in every area of our lives.

Dear Ms. T.: Israel is the DEFENDER of Western civilization. If Israel is ever, G-d forbid, destroyed, Europe, and that includes Scotland, is next on the Islamofascist hit list. Bless you for your support.

As it is the 10 days of penitence and we are all so serious I ill slip in A LITTLE JOKE TO LIGHTEN THE MOOD ,IT MADE ME LAUGH ANYHOW -It IS WITH THE PERMISSION OF THE MODERATOR

tell me who was the most famous man who ever lived."

A little Irish boy put his hand up and said, "It was St. Patrick."

The teacher said, "I'm sorry Sean, that's not correct."

Then a little Scottish boy put his hand up and said, "It was St. Andrew."

The teacher replied, >"I'm sorry, Hamish, that's not right either.."

Finally a little Jewish boy raised his hand and said, "It was Jesus Christ."

The teacher said, >"That's absolutely right, Marvin. Come up here and I'll give you the $10."

As the teacher was giving Marvin his money, she said, "You know, Marvin,

since you're Jewish, I was very surprised you said 'Jesus Christ.'"

Marvin replied, "Yeah. In my heart, I knew it was Moses -- but

business is business."

Following phil's old favourite, I can't resis quoting this from the pages of Leon Rosten's The Joys of Yiddish:
---

Belinsky could scarcely believe his eyes: there, on the Day of Atonement, at a table right in the window of the Sea King Restaurant, sat his old friend Herman Hochschuler - eating oysters!
Into the Sea King dashed Belinsky. "Herman! Gottenyu! Eating?! Today?! And OYSTERS?!!"
"So?" shrugged blase Hochschuler. "Isn't there an 'r' in Yom Kippur?"
