Left Foot Falsehoods

Wednesday, 13th October 2010

I am grateful to Harry’s Place (which has itself sometimes made less than obliging remarks about me) for coming to my defence over a particularly egregious misrepresentation of my views by someone called Joss Garman at a blog called Left Foot Forward. Claiming to have learned that yours truly is the ‘inspiration’ for the American blogger Pamela Geller, Garman tried to portray me as an anti-Muslim bigot – which he does by writing whopping disortions of what I have written, which are easily refutable simply by reading what I actually wrote. Despite a strong outcry by readers on the site against such falsehoods about me Garman has not taken his post down, let alone apologised. People should know therefore how despicably that site behaves.

Left Foot Forward: Evidence Based Lies

fairmind

Melanie. I sympathise with much of what you write but I wish you would cover more than Middle Eastern politics and the treatment of Israel in the world. You lose your power to influence by being so strident and so insistent on a single issue. The case against Israel may be ignorant but some of the evidence is strong. You would be a better defender if you were more balanced in how you talk about the issues. Israel is not perfect but as a country surrounded by enemies that has felt backed into aggressive policies it deserves our support. I wish you would acknowledge valid criticism when defending the existence of Israel as a free country and a safe haven.

I note the Mr Garman is co-founder of plane-stupid; stupid by name and stupid by nature

For Harry to portray Pamela Geller as an anti-Muslim bigot is, gently speaking, an explosion of ignorance.

There is no one in the US today that is so compasionately engaged in defence of battered Musim women than Pamela.

Secondly, in her blog she is frequently quoting those truly moderate Muslims, like Wafa Sultan for example, as a prof that one can indeed be a Muslim and at the same time a moderate individual and the member of a civilised society.

Unfortunately, Harry shoves exactly the same uniformed and biased approach towards TEA Party, whose members he also acuses of bigotry.

Is TEA's party spiritual leader, Sarah Palin realy a religious bigot?

Such a statement would be the most nonsensical and insulting towards that noble woman that I could ever hear.

I used to visit Harry's Place frequently in the past. However since his narcotical infatuation with Obama exploded two years ago, I lost any respect or sympathy for him.

You can tell that your words strike a chord, with them, because of the way they abuse you!

I just read Pamela Geller's remarks on Atlas shrugs and she seems much more peeved than you are about the 'inspiration' issue. I hope that you are not going to split the opposition on the Islam issue. As an ex leftie I know how much harm 'splitting' can cause. ( see' Life of Brian') Don't make me choose. I would choose you , on Cultural grounds, I am a Scottish born Australian, so I prefer your line, not the new York line , but you both have your place. I can see the roots of a quarrel and it would be what the real threat wants.

I agree. There is a huge cultural difference. I prefer Melanie and Douglas Murray but that's because I'm English.

Melanie, I completely understand why you would be angry at being deliberately misrepresented. I have sort of mixed feelings about the EDL though. I'm sure there are extremist elements among them, but the majority do seem to be ordinary, young, and working class, and not all white either.
In fact, this is Labour's generation. The generation that they thought they could brainwash and control with multiculturalism.
I must admit to a certain satisfaction when I see the Guardianistas having a hissy fit over this. Where has it all gone so wrong for them?

fairmind, your point sounds very reasonable, and yet what you are suggesting is that Melanie should meet the critics of Israel half way - conceding that they are right on some issues, presumably so as to appear more reasonable.
But that means sacrificing principles for a consensus. I sincerely hope that Melanie doesn't listen to your advice, and doesn't compromise the power of her arguments.
She makes us feel uncomfortable because usually her arguments are based on some appalling truths that more people, not fewer, should be exposed to.

Melanie,
I share P.Geller's admiration for you. But I do regret that you are so grateful to your "defender" (Harry's Place), where he casually throws slurs at Ms.Geller, someone who has put her safety and life on the line to oppose islamization in the USA. You tacitly accepted "Harry's" unjustified assault on Geller. I hope you will take some time to see what she's doing, and give her the recognition and gratitude that she deserves.

In a fairminded forum with a single standard to test for bigotry, Melanie Philllips, Pamela Geller and the EDL would be on one side of the dividing line, anti-infidel Islamists and their enablers on the other.

To me the whole Left Foot article seems to be a big wind-up. Carefully written and selectively researched with added distortions but still a wind-up and biased. Time to consider a careful and equally well researched reply if you think fit. By referring to it on here you are, I think, duty bound to reply and defend your opinions, and rightly so.

Accusations of this nature should not go unchallenged.

I agree with Bogdan from Oz and a few others here, Harry's Place is a pathetic blog that has all but lost it. Their silence on Obama's Israel hatred and his appeasement of the Islamists is deafening. Their potrayal of the EDL and the Tea Parties stateside is standard elitist Guardian-style bleating and screeching,
'they are all racist bigots' rubbish.

HP also censors comments if you show them up too much for their contradictions and pathetic dhimmitude, no matter the FACTS you have to hand. Although anti-Semitic drivel is usually let through in the name of freedom of speech.

Gene (who lives stateside) and David T at HP are among the worst and most misinformed bloggers at HP, utterly clueless and wilfully so. When you dare show them up too much, your comments do not go through.

HP goes after easy targets, Galloway and Respect and fanatical Finsbury mosque type preachers. However the real pressing issues in the UK and the Middle-East and the like are entirely off the radar, simply because HP no more get what's going on than the Beeb and the Guardian and the NY Times, because at bottom Harry's
Place is not that removed in spirit and attitudes to the Guardian reading classes.

Character assassination is a tactic that the left uses with dogmatic regularity.

Usually it is someone who's opinion that they are afraid of...one that might catch on with the public because THEY KNOW that the majority of the citizenry would agree with them.

So, the next target they choose, run to them and decide for yourself.

Do not let the them be your guide.

Left Foot Forward - when has the left been anything but backward, including Harry's Place?
