In further evidence of the British government’s hold on reality in the Middle East, it has now upgraded the status of ‘Palestinian diplomats’ in the UK from a delegation to a diplomatic mission. The Guardian reports:
William Hague said that Britain had upgraded the status of Palestinian diplomats in the UK, in a largely symbolic move aimed at encouraging progress in peace talks with Israel.
Huh? But wait...
British officials said the only real change in the work of Palestinian diplomats will be that they will be given parking spaces by Westminster council, and find it easier to get British visas for their staff. ‘This really reflects our acknowledgement of Palestinian progress in achieving administrative goals in building institutions and in progress made in fulfilling the road map,’ a British official said.
Do you think the Foreign and Commonwealth Office thinks the ‘road map’ is all about parking?

March 8th, 2011 5:34pmSorry I just don't understand why this is beyond satire. It's largely symbolic, but symbols can be important.

March 8th, 2011 6:09pm"Palestinian diplomats ... will be given parking spaces by Westminster council, and find it easier to get British visas for their staff."
That will make it easier for Palestinian diplomats to enter the UK and to get around London to meet people and talk.
Nothing wrong with that.
Is Melanie Phillips suggesting that they +shouldn't+ get British visas or parking spaces? If not, why not?

March 8th, 2011 7:09pmYes! Two such superficial leaders as Cameron and Obama flip-flopping in response to each and every poll is indeed dangerous in terms of foreign policy.....nothing you have not pointed out many times previously.....but can you last recall a government so devoid of a coherent foreign policy as this one......we cannot even decide what or what not to agree with as it is so nebulous!

March 8th, 2011 8:26pmacknowledgment of "progress made in fulfilling the road map"?
And exactly where does one find that progress? Certainly not in acceptance of temporary borders (Phase II - rejected only last week), and not in ending incitement and demonization, dismantling terror groups, ending boycotts, etc. (covered under Phase I). Nor is there any hint that any deal (which they won't even talk with Israel about) will include an "end of conflict" proviso.

March 8th, 2011 10:07pmThis is all preparatory to the Palestinians' unilateral declaration of statehood in August or September, which the Quartet is being lobbied to recognize. Britain will recognize the state.

March 9th, 2011 1:42amC. Gee, my understanding is that the Quartet is already firmly on course to have that failed and corrupt organization, the UN declare 'Palestinian' statehood in Arab occupied Judea and Samaria with East Jerusalem as the capital.
The latest piece of UN villainy is its demand to Israel (a)to remove the tomb of Rachel and the tombs of the Jewish patriarchs in Hebron from its list of national and religious sites and (b)to recognize their reclassification as Muslim religious sites.
Britain will, of course, go along with all of this in pursuing its policy of appeasing the Arab and Muslim world. Craven, craven, craven !

March 9th, 2011 7:49amits not the parking you brits should be worrying about - its more about the ability to park bomb laden vehicles, hard up against your central london diplomatic areas
that should keep your (ahem) speshul forshes busy, and out of harms way in those messy arab areas

March 9th, 2011 11:53amWow, scare quotes around 'diplomat' just like a teenager. Why not go the whole girly hog and use two pairs, put some around 'Palestinian' as well?
Mission status is the norm for Palestinian diplomats throughout Europe. The UK discrepancy was becoming embarassing. End of story.

You are correct. The silence from the Israeli government on this is frightening.
This would be the time for Israel to declare its borders - probably not as generous as Taba. Should include all of Jerusalem plus immediate settlements.

March 9th, 2011 6:57pmWhy are my pro-Israel posts consistently censored? Is it because I say I don't CARE whether Israel are right or wrong. just that they are allies agianst the muslim threat? Hey, I forgot. There ain't no muslim threat. They are all pussy cats.

March 9th, 2011 9:08pmI am sure William Hague will be proud of his new chums in the Palestinian so-called 'Mission' he is welcoming to London that a football event in a new sports centre in Ramallah has been named in honour of a female suicide bomber - Wafa Idris - who caused carnage in 2002 in Israel. Perhaps they will invite him to the final to present the prizes ! He can also ask them how they came to the conclusion this week that the Holocaust did not exist and have now banned all mention of it in Palestinian schools. He has a busy time ahead of him.
