Just look what came crawling out

Wednesday, 2nd July 2008

It seems that last Sunday’s demonstration in London celebrating Israel’s 60th anniversay has provoked a few scorpions to crawl out from under their stone. Harry’s Place reports this gem:

Here’s Mohammad Sawalha, President of the British Muslim Initiative, speaking to Al Jazeera in Arabic about his demonstration against last Sunday’s celebration of the foundation of the State of Israel:

The President of the British Muslim Initiative - Mohammad Sawalha - said in a speech to Al Jazeera:

“We, the Arab and Islamic community, gather here today to express our resentment at the celebrations by the Jewish community and the evil/noxious Jew in Britain”

[والوبيل اليهودي في بريطانيا]
Translation by DaveM

Apart from the British Muslim Initiative, Sawalha has been active in a large number of other ventures. He is the past President of the Muslim Association of Britain. He was the founder of IslamExpo, and is registered as the holder of the IslamExpo domain name. He is also a trustee of the Finsbury Park Mosque: which was taken over from Abu Hamza by the Muslim Association of Britain, with the help of Detective Inspector Bob Lambert.

He was also fingered by BBC Panorama as a Hamas activist. A pillar of the community, then.

Meanwhile, a Times report of how al Qaeda is reacting to being driven out of Afghanistan and defeated in Iraq (not that you will have read anything in the British media about this last fact, even though by any normal yardstick it should be front-page news; I wonder why?? Update: Paul Reynolds of the BBC says below that he reported this here) by regrouping in Pakistan, Somalia and Algeria contains this nugget, buried at the very end of the story:
A large number of radicalised Somalis are living in Britain and it is feared that instead of going to Pakistan for jihad training, they are travelling to Somalia.
Welcome once again to Londonistan, where the British authorities ensure that the jihadi sun never sets.

this dehumisation tactic used by Ms Phillips on this site is very undignifying. I doubt there are many species left on this earth that havent been used in comparison to the Muslim target of the day.

You claimed on 2 July: "Meanwhile, a Times report of how al Qaeda is reacting to being driven out of Afghanistan and defeated in Iraq (not that you will have read anything in the British media about this last fact, even though by any normal yardstick it should be front-page news; I wonder why??)

In fact, I wrote on the BBC News website the following story on 21 May http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7411334.stm
This was one of the first articles to point out al Qaed's difficulties in Iraq and there is also comment from Nigel Inkster, ex SIS and now with IISS, on the broader picture.

Your comment is therefore inaccurate, not that I expect you to correct yourself ( I wonder why??)

I fear that our ruling elite, many of whom passed through puberty in fetid and furtive public school dormitories, were adversely affected by David Lean's epic "Lawrence of Arabia" or "Florence of Arabia" as Noel Coward gasped upon sighting the pretty Peter O'Toole surrounded by bronzed Ganymedes, and still imbue the Arab world with romantic notions, although the unspeakable Turk has now been replaced by the unspeakable Israeli as the enemy. Too bad for Israel, too bad for the rest of us.

"this dehumisation tactic used by Ms Phillips on this site is very undignifying. I doubt there are many species left on this earth that havent been used in comparison to the Muslim target of the day."

You really have a twisted sense of ethics, values and principles...

You give your British Muslim Leader a free pass for ACTUALLY using a dehumanistic tactic on Jews in Britain.

Instead you target Ms Phillips as a bigot for pointing out a bigot. Ugh?

That "muslim targat' used a very OBVIOUS racist and bigoted statement.

Anyone who truely understands racism can see that...why can't you?

I agree, Austin. That ghastly, ignorant film about the ghastly, ignorant Lawrence has had a huge and pernicious influence: the Arab as a noble savage v. the decadent, degenerate Turk (and now, as you say, the Jew instead of the Turk). What bovine manure.

'the evil/noxious Jew in Britain'

Isn't this hate speech? racism? defamation? The very thing these maniacs are trying to legislate against with their trumped up notion of Islamophobia.
This man and his ilk inhabit a cesspool of double standards, hypocrisy and projection.

July 3rd, 2008 1:30am

Bob Latchford, no doubt you find that the Nazis have been dehumanized because their racism has been so viciously exposed? What exactly do you object to in Melanie's article? Reporting something which you'd prefer remained unnoticed?

Ahmad

July 3rd, 2008 7:58am

Dear Melanie, It is bad and getting much worse as time goes by. Just look at the blatant Nazi like anti-semitism coming out of the Islamic regime in my country Iran. They don't even bother to cover up with the usual lies like differentiating between Jews and Zionists and other similar tactics anymore. Even call Jews as the Persian equivalent of "kike" on public TV. This is Islamic Nazism pure and clear:

http://www.memritv.org/clip/en/1802.htm

As a free Iranian I can only say how sorry I am that these Islamist scum have taken over my country and keep dragging the rest of the world to destruction. How sorry we couldn't stop them.

J. Eggleston, Sawalha's comments are disgusting, and if he made them on British soil, he should be investigated by the police, but my point remains that the dehumanisation tactic used by Ms Phillips on here time after time is undignifying. Surely a writer of her experience and standing does not need to use this? If I had the time and inclination to do so, I would trawl through the archives and list the creatures that Arabs and Muslims have been compared to on here. And Adam, lets not be childish and suggest that just because I raise the point, I am a jew hating Nazi, because that just makes you look silly

LloydS

July 3rd, 2008 9:18am

While Melanie Phillips' crazed drivel is to be expected, it's some of the comments above taking her word for granted that makes one want to puke. Harry's Place is a racist, hate-filled site which is far from being a bastion of truth, a source of authentic information or a credible, balanced or fair reporting, and hence Phillips' willingness to put her own damaged name on the line by stating that whatever that vile blog states is true, speaks volumes of her and her 'followers'.
The translation that was offered by the 'DaveM' was not only wrong, it was laughable. Going back to the original piece on Al-Jazeera, Sawalha clearly talks of the Jewish 'Lobby'. That seems to have been an Arabic hurdle too far for DaveM who now appears to masquerade as a translator in his spare time when he's not spreading hatered. The word that DaveM claims he translates from 'Al-Wabeel' has no meaning in Arabic. As my 6 year-old would say: It's not even a word! To skew it in order to mean evil/noxious, is evil/noxious an act in itself.
So, Phillips and groupies...stop being silly. You're obviously stressed out for some reason, but at least have the dignity to realsie that by your lies, falsheoods, skewed attempts to 'translate' from a language you know nothing of, you destroy innocent lives and reputations. You should all be thoroughly ashamed of yourselves.

And how about the lawsuit being prepared right now by Hamas against Britain for the illegal theft of property caused by the Balfour declaration? It quite ignores the fact that the land was mostly uninhabited malaria infested swamp which the Israelis drained and put to work. And much of that was owned by absent landlords residing in Turkey, glad to be rid of it. This is actually classic Islamic expansionism. Let others do the work then appropriate it. And of course going on here where they immigrate quite happily for economic reasons, only to decide later they want their own shariah. So it's not them who have to change to fit in but us to suit them.

I’m sorry but is there something I’m missing here? I know Arabic well and I’ve just looked up the link to Al-Jazeera you provided .There is no such wordÇáæÈíá . In fact Sawalha clearly uses the term ‘Lobby’ ÇááæÈíand not this odd and awkward word that DaveM claims that he has ‘translated’ÇáæÈíá, i.e. ‘al-wabeel’…that doesn’t even mean anything, let alone ‘evil/noxious’ as DaveM stupidly puts it.

Seriously, is this just stupidity at play, or are you guys just sensing
that you’re losing the war out there and have resorted to what can only be termed…reaching??
This is a clear lie! It is better for you to take this hoax translation off your website before Sawalha takes you to court!

Adam B.

July 3rd, 2008 10:41am

Bob Latchford, go on then. Let's see these comparisons you talk about. Any examples? The upshot of your ridiculous argument is that you don't like these anti-semites being exposed, because it looks bad for the people who spew this filth.

Ann

July 3rd, 2008 10:57am

Jack, what drivel. Oscars are no measure of quality, only of money spent. They mean exactly nothing.
How many Oscars have you won, that you think you can dictate to me what to think? ('lighten up' - what bullshit). I am not in the film industry, but am doing quite well in my own profession, thanks very much.

Lloyd, Selva and whatever other name he comes up with is busy trying to persuade various blogs that there is a gross 'mistranslation' at play in this story. Anyone who cares to investigate will be aware that there isn't.

He has already been shown to be a lying idiot on Harrys Place, hence his appearance here with his regurgitated waffle.

I recommend users here ignore and do not indulge.

More importantly, like other posters, I am glad to see Mr Reynolds joining us on the site; although i suspect he will pretend to quietly slip away lest he has to answer some rather uncomfortable questions.

Pity, it would have made for good sport.

Has anyone thought of asking Mel to write her posts and taking her responses in Yiddish?

It seems a shame to open the debate to non believers, and by writing it all exclusively in Yiddish you could all talk to each other happily without having to suffer the indignities of the occasional antagonistic opinion?

It's not clever counter-arguing by claiming that various posters must be the same person (can't you stand believing that there are more than one person who proposes a different idea to your own), and that he/they must be idiots simply because they have disseminated your position. You should try actually arguing your case. The fact is that the link to the interview with Sawalha clearly shows him referring to the Jewish Lobby, with no utterance of any 'evil/noxious' anything. If your 'investigation' shows otherwise, please please please let us have it...me, selva and all those whom you would like to lump together into one person would absolutely love to hear it!

James

July 3rd, 2008 8:56pm

When that Jewish spokesman was caused of threatening the Palestinians with a "shoah" and the Hebrew was mistranslated as "holocaust", dishonest people pretended otherwise. I think this is a similar case. The Arabic media can certainly be highly anti-semitici, but in context, it seems clear that this alleged anti-semitism was an innocent spelling mistake. The Arabic words for "evil" and "lobby" are very similar. Why refer to "the Jewish community" without qualification if you're going to say "the evil/noxious Jew" immediately afterwards? The "evil Jewish community" would be the logical way to express the sentiment. But referring first to "the Jewish community" and then "the Jewish lobby" is perfectly logical: the community and the lobby aren't the same thing.

Ann

July 3rd, 2008 11:46pm

More drivel from Michael. Some (many?) of us are not Jewish. And many Jews don't speak Yiddish.

While it is perfectly plausible that a typo changed

LWBY = 'lobby' into

WBYL = 'baleful'

it's not true that 'the baleful Jewish (thing)' has no meaning in Arabic. Adjectives are often used as substantives or nouns in Arabic.

Zkharya

July 4th, 2008 10:27am

Hi James,

the word 'Shoah' wasn't used by a member of the Anglo-Jewish community.

And the language of Hamas, Hizbullah and other Islamicist groups is frequently quite openly, in Arabic, to their own members, of the ethnic cleansing or genocidal variety with regard to Israel.

In fact, with regard to the Palestinian leadership at least, it has been so since before the second world war.

Zkharya

July 4th, 2008 11:49am

James,

I misread some your post re. 'shoah' and reacted wrongly. I think you make a reasonable point.

LWBY could easily by mistyped as WBYL.

But then, Al Jazeera could have issued a simple apology for their mistake and any offence caused.

Ann

July 4th, 2008 1:41pm

Notice that the author seems to think that Peter O'Toole and TE Lawrence are the same person AND that he (not sure which) was a Jewish agent working in cahoots with Kemal Ataturk (nice hat!).

http://secretjews.wordpress.com/005/

john doe

July 4th, 2008 11:01pm

Charles: Thanks for the link. More deranged garbage from the Jew haters..or rather, enviers. The most virulent anti-semites are characterised by a paranoid psychosis. Indeed, according to DSM IV they are diagnosable paranoid schizophrenics and in urgent need of treatment. The difference between the clinical condition and these demons is that they are socially adjusted and can pass as normal balanced humans.
What is it that makes someone incessantly, ceaselessly fabricate libellous conspiracies about the Jews? The whole of the Islamic world does so, many in the West continue to do so, and even recently some particularly vicious comics reminiscent of Der Stürmer propaganda were circulated in S Korea of all places. I think this oldest hatred is rooted in a consciousness that is deeply uneasy with itself, which loathes itself,is profoundly alienated from the source of all that is good in life, which is utterly lacking in true self respect, riddled with envy of what is creative, resourceful, productive and successful(look at Israel), which suffers from a gigantic and crippling inferiority complex, and thus escapes from this unbearable existential failure into an irrational hatred of the Jews. And as Melanie constantly and heroically points out, we're seeing this pathology rearing its vile head again. And when it does, you know there is something rotten, decadent and weak at the heart of the culture that spawns it.
