This is my first post for the Spectator. In the coming months I hope to be writing about the fight for liberal and democratic values in Britain - don't worry I am not a Liberal Democrat, they are either sitting out the great struggles of our time or on the wrong side - culture, politics and anything else that comes along. The editor, a kind and caring man, warned me that posters here could sometimes be rather rough. I'm all for freedom of speech. But I in turn should warn you that I am an Observer columnist, and this is how we deal with readers who do not treat us with due deference.

November 22nd, 2010 10:18pm Report this commentOh dear, I really don't think The Spectator should have posted the really rather unpleasant advertisement for The Sunday Observer on its pages.

November 22nd, 2010 10:42pm Report this commentI can never make out what your politics are. At least your articles are legible if unfathomable - on TV and radio I can never understand a word you're on about except to vaguely understand it's usually angry. Thought the video was horrible. Due deference expected or abusive profanity dished out. Very balanced. Cult of celebrity extends to blogging. We are unworthy (and foaming most of the time), so cast your pearls among us oh great one.

November 23rd, 2010 12:08am Report this commentThe infamous "Orwell Shortlist" video is a lot funnier. In the silences, you could certainly hear the muffled thwrrrrpphll of two-fold cotton poplin being soiled.
Carry on.

November 23rd, 2010 9:05am Report this commentIf you're the same Nick Cohen that wrote for the Evening Standard then you are most welcome. I'm afraid that the Observer definition of Liberal is far too intolerant for me and it's version of "democracy" much too corporatist !

November 23rd, 2010 10:34am Report this commentArf arf dat woz funny.I have read what`s left and described you,in the past,as on the 'Orwell-road' to conservatism. My impression is that you are regarded as more or less a traitor by the left so you are alright with me.
I look forward to reading what you have to say although I am not sure I care much about your foprign policy interests

November 23rd, 2010 3:56pm Report this commentThe posters on here are not rough, Nick, they're just always right.
I seem to remember that you wrote an excellent demolition of Brown in Standpoint, and also remember a presentation on This Week. Although the subject matter of that escapes me, it sticks in my mind because I know I disagreed strongly with it.
I do agree about Tuscany, btw.

November 23rd, 2010 4:14pm Report this commentWhat a deeply unpleasant advert. Loads of pointless swearing and a bigger male hectoring and intimidating a smaller female in her own house. Speaking as a thick pie munching beer swilling ill-educated Northerner, I thought Observer types would have thought the same about it.

November 23rd, 2010 8:54pm Report this commentI think it's time to tell the commenters here that the video is not an Observer advert, viral or otherwise. It is from an Armando Iannucci sketch show http://t.co/X60GGfe
Armando Iannucci has also written for the Observer. It is a JOKE.

Blimey! - I stand corrected. Its no Grauniad advert. Its painfully raight-on Guardian writing media darling Armando writinf lazy misogynistic sh!te.
What is the conceit/point then? Ive checked out some of the YouTube East End Thug'd oeuvre and I dont get it yet.
