Cameron is wrong to target the Quilliam Foundation

Monday, 7th March 2011

A few weeks ago, the Prime Minister promised a muscular liberalism that would take on the Islamist extremist groups Jack Straw, Ken Livingstone, John Denham and other frightened or simply ugly and unprincipled Labour politicians had funded.

"Let's properly judge these organisations: Do they believe in universal human rights - including for women and people of other faiths? Do they believe in equality of all before the law? Do they believe in democracy and the right of people to elect their own government? Do they encourage integration or separatism?"

Little did his admirers realise at the time that his first target would be the Quilliam Foundation, which the religious far right loathes because it does believe in universal values, women’s rights, democracy and integration. Even cynics, such as your correspondent, assumed that Mr Cameron would have known that it would be good for him, British Islam and the wider liberal culture if Quilliam flourished. We overestimated him. In a letter to the Prime Minister Denis MacShane describes the vertiginous gap between Cameron’s words and deeds:  'From Denis MacShane MP

TO : Rt Hon David Cameron MP, Rt Hon Michael Gove MP, Rt Hon Teresa May MP

7 March 2011

Dear Prime Minister, Dear Michael, Dear Teresa

Quilliam Foundation

I was shocked to read  today that cuts in Home Office funding may lead to the closure of the Quilliam Foundation.

Ever since Ed Hussain and Maajid Nawaz set it up Quilliam has been a beacon in London for clear-headed, moderate, balanced analysis and policy recommendations on the vexed problem of radical, extreme Islamist ideology and its nefarious impact on British Muslims.

Both men through the writing and work are an inspiration here and abroad. Only the other week I was taking an important American journalist to meet Mr Nawaz as he was the best guide to aspect of this problem in the UK.

I fought under the last administration against those who wanted to see the ideological and communication struggle against extreme Islamist politics – including rampant anti-semitism and invocation to violence in Middle East conflicts – down-graded or returned to the denial of the problem that pervaded Whitehall at least until July 2007.

I appreciated the robust language you used in support of what Quilliam stands for, Prime Minister, not the least at the CST dinner last Wednesday and the arguments of the Education Secretary.

Closing Quilliam will send the wrong signal at the wrong time to the enemies of our values and our freedom. I hope this vital work is allowed to continue.

Denis MacShane MP'

I see the letter is dated 2010 - is that your mistake or McShane's?

Is it the correct policy for our government to be paying the running expenses of think tanks? I remember an almighty stink about Gordon Brown's pet think tank getting direct funding and material assistance.

However worthy the thinking is should the taxpayer be paying for someone's hobby horse?

Ed Husain and Maajid Nawaz are former members of Hizb ut-Tahrir. They now appear on TV to show off their expensive suits paid out of their ludicrously high salaries which come 100% from the public purse.

Most Muslims thought they were idiots when they were in Hizb ut-Tahrir, as they do now they are mouthpieces for the likes of Denis 'Eight Laptops' MacShane.

Cohen used to promote another supposed convert, Hassan Butt, who admitted to being a liar and fantasist only in it for the money.

It was our mistake; typo now corrected.

It's not the Government's job to fund private think-tanks with taxpayers' money. We already have Policy Exchange, Centre for Social Cohesion etc which also study Islamist extremism.

Another Cohen post, another snide Erica Blair retort - it's good to see some things in life don't change.

The first question is, surely, have they cut funding to Quilliam over and above that to other less moderate groups? If that is the case, then it is nothing short of outrageous.

If, on the other hand, there is no longer any funding to any Muslim organizations the question is then is it right to use public money to any of support them?

I think the problem of extremism in mosques (funded by Saudi money) is so great that it is wise to continue supporting Quilliam but not at an extravagant level – whether it has been I don’t know, but Nick’s Virtual Stalker Erica Blair seems to think so and she probably spends an unhealthy amount of time chasing her demons and might even be right.

Why should muslim immigrants need special funding over other immigrant groups.
What do you think a vote in Britain or Europe would show regarding the halting of all muslim immigration and repatriaton of those already in Britain and Europe.
Muslims are not wanted and christians are appalled by their barbarian practices
We welcome their divwersity was the mantra from Tony the phony Blair and the labour
stooges but how many would agree to the high breeding horrors sucking the welfare system dry.
When they arrive seeking asylum they don't come dressed in the offensive night shirt with a beard and the fat burka clad obscenity walking behind Mustafa Jihad this dress code comes later after benefits are secured.

That's the problem with large-scale immigration. People (well, left-wing people) are horrified at the mere mention, out loud, of looking at the matter with the ultimate possibility of taking steps that might conceivably be used to reduce it - but they are equally horrified at the possibility of any welfare cuts - or the possibility (should that be "probability"?) that the holy NHS/welfare state might be damaged and then destroyed as a result of the inevitable costs incurred by high immigration.

Oedipus Rex - one wonders when Ms Erica Blair became spokes(person) for 'moderate' Islam, and at the same time, the self-appointed and tediously predictable detractor of all-things Cohen. One can't imagine why, if she has such an issue with him, she turns up on his blog with such monotonous regularity - unless it's a 'Basic Instinct' thing.

public money should not be frittered away on Quilliam or any other foundation for that matter, Hussain and Nawaz could continue writing, believing in universal values, women’s rights and stuff without it, couldn’t they?

and another thing: the boy would be well advised to listen to the unwashed what the problem is, it’s they ‘what will win it for him’.

couldnt we ask the Benghazi people if we could land 16 Air Assault Brigade? With air support they could move toward Tripoli and the game would be up for Gadaffi. Otherwise they will be next in the firing line.

Am i missing something:
'I was shocked to read today that cuts in Home Office funding may lead to the closure of the Quilliam Foundation.'

May lead...

Read today....where?

Denis McShane, ex Labour party member expelled for iffy expenses, is hardly a shining beacon of truth, an unsullied purveyour of unvarnished gospel floating above party politics. Is there no better basis for this story than what he read in an unreferenced source that 'may' happen.

It's right that the government should stop funding the Quillium foundation. Not because the Qullium is on a par with the MCB and other Islamic groups; rather because government should stay out of the identity politics business.
