Since they started in 1984, the Spectator / Threadneedle Parliamentarian of the Year Awards have become one of the most anticipated fixtures on the Westminster calendar. Despite the expenses-related gloom which currently hangs over Parliament, this year is no different. Already, there's much chatter about whom our team of expert judges will select to succeed Boris Johnson as Politician of the Year, and who will wrest the Newcomer of the Year award from Peter Mandelson's grip.
But the Spectator's judges won't be only people to get their say. As we did last year, we are inviting you to vote for a Readers' Representative. This should be the elected official who you believe has best pursued the noble art of politics, putting the public interest ahead of everything else. All you have to do is scroll downwards and - in no more than 250 words - nominate your choice.
Throughout October, we’ll print a selection of the best nominations in the magazine each week. Then, on October 28th, the reader who has submitted the best-written nomination will be revealed. They’ll receive a bottle of champagne and two tickets to the lunch at Claridges where the awards are announced. At those awards we'll also announce which politician received the largest number of readers' nominations and they will be presented with the Reader’s Representative award.
Closing date for entries is Monday 26 October 2009, 5pm. Good luck.
