Dylan Jones opens his diary

As for Derek Draper, the Damian McBride story is just another chapter in his long and not always blemish-free career. He has always been fiercely partisan, and the last time we met he gave a good impression of someone who these days exists solely to hate David Cameron. We were introduced at an awards ceremony in London last year, and he immediately slammed into me, criticising me for the book I had written with the Tory leader (Cameron On Cameron, for any of you who have foolishly yet to buy a copy), accusing me of being too ‘on-message’. We spent five minutes arguing before he wandered off in search of another victim. But in the words of Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer, he wouldn’t let it lie. And later, as I was walking by his table on my way out, Draper shouted at the top of his voice, causing his table collectively to flinch with embarrassment, ‘He’ll let you down in the end, you know.’ Luckily for all of us, McBride, Draper, Ed Balls, Gordon Brown and Uncle Tom Cobley (a socialist, natch) have already let themselves down rather spectacularly.
