McCain is picking the wrong fight with Obama over Iran

Sunday, 18th May 2008

Last week, John McCain joined in the argument between President Bush and Obama over the principle of talking to Iran. But it is not the principle that McCain should be hitting Obama on.

At some point, the Americans are going to have to talk to Iran. America must be seen to have gone the extra mile if an administration is going to persuade either domestic or international opinion that a strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities is necessary. (This is, obviously, assuming that Iran continues trying to develop nuclear weapons capability).

Where McCain should easily be able to best Obama is on the question of who do you want sitting opposite them? The choice between a constitutional law professor with four years of experience in national politics and no national security background and a veteran who came through years of torture in a POW camp, commanded the largest aviation squadron in the US Navy and has been active in Congress on national security issues for a quarter of century should favour McCain and is where he should concentrate his attacks.

Generally, McCain needs to ensure that this election is a choice between him and Obama. If he allows Obama to turn the election into a referendum on the Bush presidency, then the Republicans will take a mighty beating in November.
