Welcome to my new blog

Monday, 14th September 2009

I’ve always rather liked the idea of blogging, as it seems – from the available evidence – to be motivated by two qualities I have a lot of time for: narcissism and spite. So I hope that this new blog of mine comes, in time, to be the very apogee and spitefulness and narcissism, on as broad an agenda as possible.

I’ll be writing here every day, just about, and look forward to discussing stuff with you in an open, democratic and interactive medium. The man from Hounslow, for example, who regularly writes me letters addressed to that “filthy jew-boy Ron Little” will now be able to save himself the price of a stamp. The more objectionable, then, the better.

A while ago some columnists – led by the perpetually idiotic Yasmin Alibhai Brown – started whining that bloggers were being terribly nasty to them and it really shouldn’t be allowed. The good thing about blogging is that it undercuts the epic self-importance of scribblers such as me and Yasmin, and brings a whole new self-importance of its own. It is a commitment to you, the reader, that I pledge that I will be vile about Yasmin at least once a month and the even more idiotic Janet Street-Porter even more frequently. Nothing is off limits.

More seriously, at a time when there is a weird consensus among our politicians upon a whole range of issues – race, immigration, education, climate change, Islam, equal rights, health and safety, public spending – which is at odds with the view of the majority of the population, this might be one small artillery post from which we can strafe our masters.

Could you perhaps arrange an RSS feed for your blog, as already exists for other Spectator bloggers?

This is splendid news indeed. Now when I get censored on grounds of "taste" by the Coffee House's Black Monk, I'll simply be able to respond "Well if Rod Liddle can get away with it why can't I?"

Hope you're reading this, James!

PS I'm now really looking forward to you using the words "gay and "Gordon" in the same sentence, Rod.

So, The Spectator has signed up Mel and now Rodney.

I know the blogs are personal and not part of some homogenous hymn sheet, but there is a sort of double-act quality to having them both.

They’re a sort of Slash and Axl of British journalism.

Like Slash and Axl, they would probably explode in the same room together, but are in a way united by their lack of banality and the fact that the public don’t care for much of the ‘competition’.

Because of his curls and chain-smoking, Rod will have to take the part of Slash. That means Mel will have to wear the bandana and Lycra.

Are you brave enough to tell her, Rod?

Now turn it up there and ruin the Yazz Monster’s and Janet Street-Self-Aggrandiser’s day.

Dunno why this might be, but today (Wednesday) is the first time I've been able to access this blog. (I'd been trying since Monday, but all that came up was the front page of Coffee House.)

Anyway, while I'm on, can I just say a quick thank you Rod for reminding me in last week's article that it has been too long since I last indulged my own occasional penchant for Hitler porn. I've got a birthday coming up next month and a box set of The World at War is now top of my wish list.

Just wondered if you had any other recommendations, whether books or DVDs? I've never quite got around to investing in one of the thick-as-a-brick biographies, but there's no time like the present.

I've never read Mein Kampf either, though I was interested to learn that the original title, before the publisher struck a valuable blow for concision, was Four and a Half Years (of Fighting) Against Lies, Stupidity and Cowardice. Seen through today's eyes, that kind of reads like the title of a blog, doesn't it?

"epic self-importance of scribblers such as me and Yasmin", I think you'll find that should be "Yasmin and me". Unload the bile on whomsoever you wish but please do not in good English.

totally agree with this atest attack on israel. its fair game for the loony left to racially attack the only true democracy in the middle east. one can only hope that at some future date the same author and his supporters are accussing britain of war crimes for defending our people in much the same way as israel!

Hey your photo is a bit flattering, judging by your appearance on Dinner with Portillo. Taken about 30 years ago I would guess, trying to look like a mean and moody a youngs Jools Burchill in NME. C`mon something more up to date, tis a new blog after all.

PS What about Julie Burchill Fraser? She would compliment this site and stimulate debate.

Much as I disapprove of your atheism, you are probably my favourite columnist for your gusto in invective, now that Auberon Waugh is no more. Could you do something about that bloody NatWest advertisement?

Something that was well overdue.

"[A]t a time when there is a weird consensus among our politicians upon a whole range of issues – race, immigration, education, climate change, Islam, equal rights, health and safety, public spending – which is at odds with the view of the majority of the population..."

Understatement?

I for one am LIVID!

Thank you all, and delighted to be here. I shall try to attack Leeds whenever possible and of course carry a banner for the brave and right Lions. I'm not an atheist - I'm C of E, which I accept is not wholly dissimilar. Hope you enjoy
