Can we beat Andorra?

Friday, 22nd August 2008

There's a great post on Bryan Appleyard's excellent blog:

Quote of the decade from England captain John Terry after another dismal performance by the worst football team in the world.
'Hopefully,'  said the ashen-faced skipper, 'we can get off to a good start against Andorra and go from there.'
The poverty of ambition of England footballers never ceases to amaze.

Who cares? Why don't you look to athletes who really care about their sports, and work hard, to represent their country. Team GB are doing great, and remain humble, unlike these over paid prima donnas who appear in the tabloids getting drunk and assaulting women.

I am much more concerned about Spurs beating Sunderland tomorrow!

I love my country - but dolts like overpaid overindulged John Terry don't (couldn't) represent me - nor do the ridiculous FA, and I could never back them in any competition. To hell with the England football team - they represent everything which brings this country down low.

I have a certain sympathy for the lads in the England football team. They are overpaid of course, but that's not their fault. What are they supposed to say? "er no fanks mate, i won't 'ave the 40 fousand a week, fifty quid'll do me and a pie at lunchtime wiv me pint..."??

The problem is that a national media-led obsession with the national footy team is mistaken for a sporting culture by a nation which has been reducing the amount of sport played in schools for years, starting with the Tories' (I regret to say) lamentable moves to start selling off school playing fields.

If more people actually played sport then we would probably find less obsession with Engerland's (lack of) success in friendlies and a corresponding improvement in her results, as well as having a happier healthier thinner populace, and more than likely one that would never vote socialist ever again.

Quite so, Chris.
That is why I only support the England cricket team.

The embarassing Bryan Appleyard has a great blog? That would be a first.

"Can England beat Andorra?"

Our current team would have some difficulty beating Aunt Dora (in her wellies).
