It's been a tough competition, but there's a clear winner in the Sarah Palin joke of the week contest. And it is, of course, Jon Stewart. Remarking on the idea that she knows about foreign policy because Alaska is next to Russia:

Alaska is also next to the North Pole so, obviously, she must also be friends with Santa.

BTW, Michael Barone is interesting on Sarah Palin's teleprompter malfunction.

Stephen, limerick competitions can be fun and I don’t remember ever having seen one in the Speccie. Would you care to host one now? The first line is:

There was an Alaskan in glasses

For any would-be contestants recollecting recent incidents concerning (a) “undivided Jerusalem” or (b) Canada and NAFTA, may I respectfully point out that in American English “Messiah” does not rhyme with “liar”.

Who's Jon Stewart and why was his "joke" funny? Alaska is 30 miles from Russia. It shares many marine resources with Russia. Geddit? There will be a military intelligence present in Alaska that Governor Palin knows about, but Jon Stewart doesn't. His "joke" was puerile.

PS - Russia is real. I've never read such a pointless, flat "joke" in my life.

I have a "joke"! Jon Stewart rhymes with Wiiliam Seward, the US Secretary of State who negotiated the purchase of Alaska!!!!! Laugh? I thought I'd fall over!!!

You have made 2 mistakes. 1 trendy soft liberals forget that a real woman is made of stronger stuff than some men, more feminine, stronger and wiser. The man who was tortured in Vietnam and would not go till his friends were released is wiser than you know.Blair is a featherweight in contrast and Brown has managed the finances for 10 years not Darling and the mature electorate is not stupid even if the liberal diletantes in the press are!
Hurt people laugh, Yeshua Ha Messiach can heal the sick, raise the dead, forgive sins, but only if He is asked. Luaghter was invented in heaven and sent to earth!

I would have thought that for the American Vice-President to be friends with Santa would be excellent news. Think what Santa could be prevailed upon to put in Putin's Christmas stocking. And, since, though not American, I am a staunch McCain/Palin man, can I have a very large bottle of Fifteen year old Glenlivet in MY Christmas stocking. Make that two to celebrate (belatedly) their landslide victory against uppity Obama.
