Larry David, cancer sufferer

Friday, 5th September 2008

Only Larry David - the funniest man on the planet, by a mile could make a cancer ad like this:

To describe Larry David as funny, a comedian, a comic writer or actor doesn't come close. It's like calling Jascha Heifetz a violinist or Don Bradman a batsman. He is the greatest. Ever.

I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer 12 years ago and spend a fair bit of time on the Internet helping men and their families through the process of diagnosis and choice of treatment.

This ad came up for discussion on a number of blogs and the general feeling was that it wasn't particularly funny for men with cancer. It isn’t that we don’t laugh at the disease – one of my sites has a page devoted to humorous pieces – it was just that the presentation was beyond the bounds of polite behaviour, by someone who had not experienced the disease.
