Further to my post on Jeremy Bowen below, Oliver Kamm has a typically eruditte post on this particularly stupid remark by Paul Reynolds:
David Miliband's Jewish background will be noted particularly in the Middle East.Israel will welcome this - but equally it allows him the freedom to criticise Israel, as he has done, without being accused of anti-Semitism.
I urge you to read the 1800 words in which Oliver demonstrates that "David Miliband's antecedents give us no clue whatsoever to his stance as Foreign Secretary".

July 1st, 2007 2:52pmI am an American and I listen to BBC World Service on my local NPR station. I couldn't sleep one night and I turned on the radio. Reporting Religion was on. It was during the Presidential election. The reporter for Reporting Religion decided to interview members of a synagouge in Boston. I couldn't decide whether to laugh, cry or be angry afterwards. First of all he didn't even get the denomination of the synagogue right. The only subject he was interested in was Israel. The interviewees talked about taxes, helping the poor, social security and every single issue but Israel. They were obviously offended. The reporter was too obtuse and too prejudiced to realize that he had offended his interviewees. He never considered that Jews are full citizens of America and base their votes on many issues. Israel is just one of the many issues Jews measure candidates by. Of course, then I really counldn't sleep. The members of the British Board of Deputies tried to tell FM Bevin that Jews were being systematically murdered by the Nazis. Bevin replied, "You Jews are always wailing about something." Not much has changed since then.

July 2nd, 2007 10:40amI agree with your assessment, and also that of Oliver Kamm. Most people I have spoken to in Israel about the appointment have simply discussed Milliband's track record on foreign policy issues and have not mentioned any Jewish antecedents - not even once
