Mr Editor has a post about John Simm as The Master. He is wonderful, yes. But there is and will only ever be one true Master: Roger Delgado.
Here's my Master story. A certain Roger Delgado was a member of the same synagogue I attended as a child. I cannot fully describe to you what it felt like on a Saturday morning to see, sitting ahead, the Master at prayer. To say it was a mix of sheer terror and utter fascination doesn't remotely do it justice.
(BTW, a couple of sites describe him as Catholic. He certainly wasn't listening to the Pope when we used to see him in synagogue!)

June 30th, 2007 8:31pmHis full name, it appears, was Roger Caesar Marius Bernard de Delgado Torres Castillo Roberto. As ill luck would have it there was at the time another actor with the same name, so he was obliged by Equity to take the less distinctive 'Roger Delgado'.

June 30th, 2007 8:39pmthe same Roger Delgado who played the Spanish Ambassador in Sir Francis Drake in 1960s ITV?

July 1st, 2007 2:54pmSaif - yes! There was an in-joke about it in Doctor Who when a mistaken sighting of the Master was explained as "It was actually the Spanish Ambassador". Quite agree with Stephen that none of the other actors (Ainley or Simm or the other one no-one remembers) have really nailed the character like Roger Delgado did.

July 1st, 2007 8:56pmIt is indeed the same. I watched the DVDs of Sir Francis Drake only last year. They meant a lot more to me than they did wnen I was a schoolgirl. I was surprised by their authenticity for all the stage-like scenery.
