What's happened to my blog roll?

Wednesday, 4th July 2007

A few people have emailed me to ask why some sites which were on my old blog roll are not here now - Melanie Phillips' site especially. Have I changed my mind about her analysis, I am asked?

Not in the least. I think there are no more perceptive writers on the battle to save liberty from Islamism than Melanie, whose site is a must read.

As always, it's cock up rather than conspiracy - I'm not yet able to put up a proper blog roll. When I can, hers will of course be there, along with many others.

"I think there are no more perceptive writers on the battle to save liberty from Islamism than Melanie.." Gosh, if that really were true then we would be up the creek without a paddle...

Stephen, have a look at this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/6270020.stm Scroll down and you will not see a more telling quote on the attitude of the left to the conflict currently underway. “He said he had few conversations with his captors, but that in one, a leader of the Islamist group "described me as a prisoner in the war between Muslims and non-Muslims, a phrase which saddened me really". "I guess I'm a non-Muslim but I'm really not at war with anybody." Umm, yes you are matey – that bloke just said you are. You might not have started that war but you are in it up to your eyeballs. And like it or not, 114 days in captivity should tell you clearly they don't view you as on their side.

When I read that Frank Gardner, the BBC correspondent who is now paralysed after being shot six times at close range in Saudi Arabia (three days earlier 22 non-Muslim had their throats cut and the British expatriate Michael Hamilton was shot and his body tied to a car and dragged around the town) thinking to himself in what he believed were his final moments "For the past few years I had tried hard to explain...the thinking behind the Al-Qaeda phenomenon to Western and International audiences. And this was my reward?" and when I hear the father of the BBC hostage Alan Johnson arguing (when it looked likely that he was going to be decapitated) that his kidnappers ought to release him because "he is on your side" I cannot help concluding that there is a fine line between seeking to empathise with your enemies and becoming their apologists. If only BBC journalists could be as supportive of those who believe that Western civilization is not only superior but something worth fighting for; but that would be too much to ask.

Everything was so much better with the old site.

"I think there are no more perceptive writers on the battle to save liberty from Islamism than Melanie.." Gosh, if that really were true then we would be up the creek without a paddle... - That's where Mad Mel thinks we are already! We're doomed, doomed! And it's all the fault of the BBC and the Guardian, of course.

As far as I understand it - I rarely read Melanie Philips - her argument is that the BBC appeases evil not that its employees actually go out and plant bombs.
