John McCain's speech to CPAC yesterday was a masterclass in how to win over a hostile audience. McCain was hardly the first choice of many US conservatives, and there's been a lot of talk about many voting Democrat rather than for a RINO (Republican In Name Only).
So he had one task yesterday - and it was a delicate one. He had to reassure those sceptical conservatives that he was a true conservative, whilst not frightening off the very centre voters that he can attract - his USP.
If you want to watch a class act, have a look at this (and then the second and third extracts). Trust me, it's worth it, whatever your views. As one of the Fox News analysts put it afterwards - he hit it out of the park.

February 8th, 2008 11:36amA class act? Not if you are a Republican who disagrees with him on immigration, campaign finance, taxes, manmade global warming, etc. He has been invariably rude, insulting, & condescending. Far more than he ever has been with the Democrats. Granted he made a good speech yesterday, but I don't know if he really means it. My fear is that he will turn the Republican party into an American version of the British "Conservative" party-- a pale imitation of their opposition that seldom wins elections.

February 8th, 2008 12:27pmUnfortunately, he doesn't have much of a chance. There is just so little difference between himself and Clinton. At least she claims to be a liberal.

February 9th, 2008 12:40amHis speech was not a patch on Mitt Romney's concession speech. McCain is an out and out liberal for whom conservatives will just not vote. The Clinton machine will crucify McCain. Hillary Clinton - leader of the free world. Doesn't bear thinking about.
