February 26th, 2008 11:31am"It has to be so weird being Jewish and walking the streets of Berlin." -- It is weird being Jewish and walking the streets of virtually any city or town in Europe. I lived for a time in Łódź in Poland. Before the Holocaust an estimated 230,000 Jews (around 34% of the total population) lived in that city. Almost all Jews were murdered. Today a handful of Jews are left; virtually all of the Jews left in Poland after the war (most had survived the war in Russia) were chased out by a lethal combination of murderous pogroms and state-sponsored anti-Semitism. Today (well, at least until a few years ago), pretty much every building in Łódź has been defaced with the most hideous anti-Semitic graffiti.
