I haven't a clue

Thursday, 1st May 2008

A couple of people have asked me why I haven't given my forecast for the elections today: will it be Boris or Ken?

I am not in a pollster's office. I do not have any special access to opinion polling. I'm typing this in my study in Finchley. I am sitting with a (lovely) view of my garden. I've been out for a nice lunch with friends. Now I'm home again.

How on earth do I have any special insight into what the result will be?

"How on earth do I have any special insight into what the result will be?"

Tsk, rather letting the side down there. No special insight into something and therefore you stay silent? Are you sure you've quite grasped the point of this blogging thing yet?

I've just read 'I Haven't A Clue'. It's fatuous.

You are beginning to sound like a cross between Samuel Pepys and James Woodforde. "Rose late. To Hampstead where dined heartily with D and O. Returned by hackney carriage to Finchley to find Mrs. P and maids absent. Spent afternoon in gardens where admired newly planted blooms. Could not work up concern for local elections. Supped alone and retired early."

The political game as played in this nation right now is - as Frank Field intimated in a recent backhand statement - 'not to talk about it in front of the children'.

In such a climate, insight as a quality, along with anything white or working class, is surplus to requirements.
