Aha, I thought. At last, an explanation as to why some apparently intelligent people are prone to believing all sorts of nonsense. Imagine, with some gene therapy Polly Toynbee could be hammering away against the iniquities of comprehensive schooling and pushing for a properly punitive penal policy.
Turns out it's still a distant dream. The story is about left-handers.

August 17th, 2007 3:40amHere's my theory. The word "ignorance" is related to the verb "to ignore". The word "knowledge" is related to the verb "to acknowledge". Put bluntly, it means that a knowledgeable person is one who ACKNOWLEDGES facts and an ignorant person is one who IGNORES facts. What comes out of a textbook is information - related to the verb "to inform". Educated people are thus merely "well-informed". They are not necessarily knowledgeable. My conclusion: "An education is no guarantee against ignorance".
