Demos' chilling uncertainty

Wednesday, 16th July 2008

There's a post at Harry's Place by a rep from Demos. It's very revealing. The writer clearly thinks he is being persuasive, but it's actually chilling. Here's his last paragraph:

We need to take the values we, and so many Muslims and non-Muslims, share as liberals and wage a battle against those values that make us deeply uncomfortable. If ours are as resilient as we hold them to be, then they will prevail.

I'm not sure I've ever read a more terrifying sentence from a mainstream think tank. Demos, remember, claims to be about 'everyday democracy'. And yet the best thing the writer can muster is a hope that our values are resilient.

Does he doubt they are? I'm not surprised, since Demos itself is happy to work in tandem with genocidal theocrats.

The writer seems utterly ignorant of the scale of the threat. Or is he simply ambivalent about khillafa dhimmi?

 UPDATE: Unbelievable. I don't think I have ever read a worse defence of a case.

If you liked that, you'll love the followup from the directory of Demos;

Pretty cringe-making.

Stephen - I just discovered, from reading the Jerusalem Post, that you are the chairman of a new think tank - the EISCA (European Institute for the Study of Contemporary Anti-Semitism). Best of luck with this, mate. Although not a Jew, it is an issue close to my heart - and I agree that it is rather pathetic that such an organisation is necessary in modern Europe.

Just looked at the site for EISCA, the images of the graves grabs you instantly.

Unforutnately we need think-tanks and centres to fight not only anti-semitism, but also Islamophobi, anti-liberalism, anti-democractic forces. The ongoing war worldwide is between the 'camp of life' and the 'camp of death'. To the latter belong Iran, Israel, Syria, America, North Korea, Venezuela, Hamas, and Hizbolla. Anyone trying to deny the qualification of their country or party to the above is either in denial or is in the same camp o the death.

Demos however is right to not to shy away from going into where others don't dare to, everyday democracy does require engagement with everyone especially those whom we don't agree with.
