Decisions, decisions. These were my alternatives: attack you for your last post (Oy vey iz mir - a Yiddishe Colonel Blimp), or agree with you here. Here won hands down. This situation cannot go on much longer. All serious schools should now be seriously thinking about jettisoning A-levels in favour of the International Baccalaureate.

The above post proves my point of the other day perfectly. Can you imagine for one moment Kamm or Pollard writing the following: "All serious schools should now be seriously thinking about".

But Joshua, haven't you heard, the A-Level is the international educational Gold Standard. The same way the NHS is the Envy Of The World. And Stephen, for shame. How could you take such a heartless swipe at hardworking students who are just... etc, etc, etc.

I'm sorry but i have to comment here. Being a student who has just finished taking GCSE examinations, I am sick of these cynics who cannot stand people getting better grades. I must admit that the exams which I took were noticeably easier than the practice papers which i had taken from previous years. There is no doubt in my mind that exams are getting easier and that the reason for such an occurence is because of the widening class divide in students these days. Quite simply, the dumb are getting dumber and the smart are getting smarter. Teaching standards have definitely decreased. Being a product of a grammar school it is a joy for me to still have a number of the 'old guard' of teachers who still believe in teaching their pupil's how to think. Sadly many of the younger generation are obsessed with meeting their targets as epitomised by the beginning of every lesson with these teachers a list of the objectives being written on the board. This takes a good 10 minutes of class time, outlining what we should have already been learning in that wasted time. To be blunt, new teachers are simply useless, Bring back the old guard and the easy way to do this; bring back grammar schools

Cruel, P.C. Grammar, but accurate, but I'm sure the lad will know that it hurt you more than it did him, to quote an expression used by my old Head prior to the several fierce canings I received - and he was a Quaker!

Tractors? What about the latest salmon-canning factory in Vladivostok?

Oh, I agree Joshua -- you aren't Oliver Kamm or Stephen Pollard. You are indeed less intellectually gifted than either. But are you Mike Janitch, a Christian creationist?
