Marginalising myth in favour of exclusively rational modes of thought has not brough humanity the earthly paradise predicted by philosophers and scientists. In The Rock (1935), T.S. Eliot laments the loss of the sacred:

Where is the Life we have lost in living?
Where is he wisdom we have lost in knowledge?
Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?

Now materially rich beyond the imaginings of our forebears, we are surprised to fid ourselves spiritually impoverished.
