About a third of the way through Against the Day, we find ourselves in a bar on the bad side of town, thick with dope smoke and anarchists, jiving to the syncopated rhythms of one ‘Dope’ Breedlove. Talk turns to anarchist theory, and a young Irish insurrectionary volunteers that the Land League was ‘the closest the world has ever come to a perfect Anarchist organization’.
